MARS HILL, Maine – Donna M. (Faulkner) Smith, 88, passed away on June 3, 2017. She was born October 9, 1928, in Bangor, Maine, the youngest of eight children, to Clarence and Beatrice (Corey) Faulkner.
She spent her childhood growing up on her family’s farm on Young Lake in Westfield, Maine, and as a teenager her family moved to Portland, Maine, where she attended Portland High School. She would often recount fond memories of her years in Portland: cheerleading for the high school football team, summer days spent at Higgins Beach, and movies at the State and Strand Theatres. Following the death of her youngest brother, Clarence (“Buggy”) during WWII in 1945, she returned with her family to Mars Hill and this is where she would spend the rest of her life.
It was here that she met John (William) Smith, Jr. and following their marriage in 1953, she would always refer to John as “the only man for me”. After her husband’s passing in 2001, Donna did, however, develop a strong passion for baseball and became an avid Red Sox fan. Anyone who knew her knew how anxiously she awaited the start of spring training and that she loved nothing more than cheering on “her boys” during any heated Red Sox/Yankees series. Donna loved to laugh, had a wonderful sense of humor, and a great outlook on life. She loved a good joke and will be remembered for bringing smiles and laughter to those around her.
Donna is survived by her daughter, Kim, and son-in-law Clinton Swett, of Freeport, Maine; her sister Marjorie Brewer of Bridgewater, Maine; and many dear nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, John, and her brother, Buggy, she was predeceased by her siblings Robert Faulkner, Margarete Turner, Winifred Brown, Letha Tweedie, and Doris Wortman.
Funeral services will be held at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Mars Hill at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10. Friends and family may call from 1:00 until the time of the service.
