PRESQUE ISLE – Janice Scott of Presque Isle, a senior in the nursing program at Northern Maine Community College, will be honored at the national level as Maine’s New Century Scholar.

Scott, who earned the recognition by attaining the top score from Maine in the All-USA Academic Team competition, will be recognized along with the top students from each state in mid-April at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention in Seattle. She will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship and be featured in AACC’s Community College Times and Community College Journal, as well as on Phi Theta Kappa’s Web site.
“I am truly humbled by this experience. There are so many other students on this campus that could just as easily have won this award,” said Scott. “I count it an honor to represent Northern Maine Community College as Maine’s New Century Scholar at the upcoming convention in Seattle.”
The New Century Scholars program honors the top scoring student from each of the 50 states in the Coca-Cola All-State Community College Academic Team program. To be named a New Century Scholar, students must be nominated by their college president and submit a completed All-USA Community College Academic Team/Coca-Cola All-State Academic Team Nomination form.
Finalists for the New Century Scholar honor from Maine’s seven community colleges are also named to the All-Maine Academic Team and each receive a $500 scholarship from Camden National Bank. Scott was among 12 outstanding students from throughout the state honored at a recent ceremony in Augusta.
“Janice Scott is an outstanding student and contributes a great deal to our campus community,” said NMCC President Timothy Crowley. “She is most deserving of this recognition and will represent NMCC, the Maine Community College System and the state well at the national convention. Students like Janice, who excel in the classroom and go above and beyond outside of the classroom and in the community, are what make our campus community the wonderful place that it is.”
The 35-year-old wife of a pastor and mother of a 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter will graduate from NMCC with an associate degree in nursing this May. Since enrolling at the college, Scott has excelled both in and out of the classroom. She serves as president of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, as a member of the Student Nurses Association, as a member of the Student Senate and has volunteered to assist with several projects on the college campus.
In the community, Scott has volunteered with the Battered Women’s Project, as well as for the American Red Cross to assist with local area blood drives.
The All-Maine Academic Team is part of the Phi Theta Kappa program, an international honor society for two-year colleges. Students are nominated and selected for the team by their college based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service.
The All-Maine Academic Team program is co-sponsored by Camden National Bank, Bangor Daily News, Creative Awards of Scarborough, and the Maine Community College System.
