Hews receives national recognition
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils (NARC&DC) is pleased to announce that Mark Hews of Threshold to Maine Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council in Gray, has received the national association’s award for outstanding performance by an RC&D coordinator in 2009.
JAMES SIPPERLY, left, president of the National Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils, congratulates Mark Hews on being named the Outstanding Coordinator in the nation for 2009. Hews, a Presque Isle native, is known throughout Maine for his work on conservation and community projects. His parents, Barbara and Eddie Hews, reside in Presque Isle.
Hews has served as the coordinator for Threshold to Maine RC&D Council for 20 years, but his colleagues say that you would never guess that to be the case. Given his great enthusiasm and clear dedication to his council and community, you would think that he had only been on the job for about a year. His eagerness and ability to listen to council members, facilitate community discussions, manage council operations, and innovate in project design are exemplary.
His most notable accomplishments over the past year include restructuring council meetings to bolster the participation of sponsors and council members, partnering with local and state groups in a coordinated effort to rebuild Maine’s small-scale and family farms, and hosting the 2009 New England regional meeting. Add to these the standard activities of RC&D Council coordinators, such as hosting workshops, managing projects, drafting grant proposals and you get a picture of Hews’ exceptional talent and dedication.
Hews, a native of Presque Isle, is the son of Barbara and Eddie Hews.
