Farewell open house
planned for Ashland schools

On Saturday, May 29 (Memorial Day weekend), there is going to be a farewell to Ashland Community Middle/High School and the Ashland Central School. An open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. is planned. There will be tours through the schools, photos and lots of reminiscing! Come on out for your chance to walk the halls of your old school(s) one last time. See some old friends, neighbors and teachers. For more information, contact Sheila Lyons at 435-2901.
The Masardis Town Office will be closed Wednesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 20. It will be open Friday, May 21 for your transactions and business. They apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
There will be a Memorial Candle Light Ceremony at the Portage Lake Centennial Pavilion on the West Road Sunday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. (Memorial Day weekend). Decorate bags in honor of a loved one or friend to be remembered. Bags cost $2 and will be available at the Portage Lake Town Office beginning May 17. They will also be available the night of the ceremony. All proceeds will go toward preserving historic town record books. This is such a special way to honor and remember your loved ones who have passed. Volunteers are needed, as well. Some really great events are happening over the next few weeks in Ashland. Mark your calendars!
Spring Concert – Tuesday, May 18. The high school and middle school bands will be holding their annual Spring Concert in the high school auditorium starting at 7 p.m. This will be the last concert of the year (and at the school!). Graduating seniors will also be recognized for their contributions to music. Admission will be by donation at the door. All proceeds will support the very important music program at our schools. Come show your support while listening to some first-class music.
Pre-K/Kindergarten promotion – Wednesday, May 19 at the grade school starting at 6:30 p.m.
Bluegrass Concert – Saturday, May 22. There will be a Bluegrass Concert hosted by the 2010 Project Grad held in the high school auditorium starting at 7 p.m. All proceeds will support the 2010 Project Grad. On the roster for the night will be the Aroostook County Blue Grass Band and Blistered Fingers. Admission will be $10. Children under 12 are free. Tickets are on sale now and will also be available at the door. There are lots of things planned for the night such as door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Miss Ashland Pageant – Scheduled for Sunday, May 23. Details are still being worked out, so no other information is available at this time. They will be included in an upcoming Ashland News as they become available to me. Please contact Roberta Belanger at 435-6155 for more information.
The retirement party for Portage Lake Town Manager Rita Sinclair is being held this Saturday, May 15 from 4-7 p.m. at the Municipal Building. It is potluck, so please bring a dish. Everyone is invited and welcomed to come to show their support and appreciation to our friend and neighbor, Rita.
Our community has recently suffered the loss of several neighbors and friends. I would like to offer my condolences to the families of Travis Lyons, Arthur Collier and Connie Bolstridge. May they rest in peace.
