Scouts tour police station

PRESQUE ISLE — Presque Isle Girl Scout Troop 1137 recently organized a multi-troop educational tour of the Presque Isle Police Department, which included Troops 1133, 1170, 1178 and 1213.

The very informative tour was led by Sgt. Laurie Kelly of the PIPD, who explained all facets of the police station’s vital role and function in the community, its operations and the protocols for handling a variety of situations.
Each of the Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts were able to closely see and experience first-hand a host of things, including: seeing the communications center where incoming calls are received; the office area for the supervising staff sergeants; paging through old ‘booking’ photo reference books for arrests made (used prior to today’s computers); fingerprint-dusting equipment; sitting in the back of a police patrol car; testing what it’s like to visit a person in jail by talking on the phone behind glass in the visitor’s room; and most impressionable of all was sitting in an actual jail cell. Each Girl Scout was also fingerprinted by Girl Scout Troop 1137 Leader Dina Harding, on a keepsake information sheet which could also be used for emergency identification purposes as well.
At the end of the tour, Sgt. Kelly gave each Girl Scout a gold foil ‘Presque Isle Junior Police Officer’ sticker to keep as a memorable token.
To demonstrate our gratitude and appreciation for Sgt. Kelly’s time and very thorough instruction, each Girl Scout in attendance signed a customized thank-you card to give to her at the conclusion of the tour.
The primary focus of Girl Scouts is to build courage, character and confidence in girls. For anyone interested in joining Girl Scouts, call toll-free 888-922-GSME (4763) or visit www.girlscoutsofmaine.org for more information.
