AUGUSTA, Maine – Rep. Jeremy Fischer, D-Presque Isle, recently presented a bill to the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee that would better protect children using the Internet from sexual predators.
The bill would provide funding to the computer crimes task force to enforce convicted sexual offenders’ probation conditions, such as an offender not being allowed to go to certain Web sites that are frequented by children.
“We need to do all we can to protect children from dangerous predators on the Internet,” said Fischer. “This bill would give law enforcement officers the tools they need to do their jobs effectively and better enable them to catch offenders.”
Under the bill, LD 193, those offenders found violating their probation would face heavier charges for subsequent offenses. Each year $100,000 would be appropriated to the enforcement effort.
