PORTLAND, ME – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the text of a statement submitted to the Congressional Record honoring Flewelling Farms for its designation as family farm of the year and McCain’s Grower of the Year.
Senator King’s Regional Representative for Aroostook County, Sharon Campbell, presented a signed copy of the statement today to Bruce and Valorie Flewelling of Flewelling Farms.
“These recognitions are given for the quality of product and commitment to the industry but also for the heart and hardiness of the family who, through trials and tribulations of unpredictable weather and markets, keeps their drive for excellence at the forefront of every day,” Senator King wrote in the statement. “The Flewellings have been doing this for six generations! The first Flewellings arrived in this country from Wales in the late 1800’s entering the United States near where the family farm is today.”
In his statement, Senator King also discussed the importance of family farms for Maine’s agriculture industry, particularly in Aroostook County, where agriculture provides thousands of jobs and contributes millions of dollars to the state’s economy. He also highlighted the Flewelling’s active involvement in their community, as members serve on municipal boards, Maine Pesticide Control Board, Agricultural Bargaining Council, as well as Maine Potato Growers.
