WESTFIELD, Maine — One driver’s urge to photograph a bear in a field resulted in a crash between two vehicles on Route 1 in Westfield Thursday morning.
At about 9:50 a.m. Sara Ouellette, 24, of Presque Isle was traveling north on Route 1 in her 2010 Hyundai sedan when she spotted a bear in a field and attempted a U-turn to take a picture of the animal, according to Maine State Police Cpl. Chuck Michaud.
Because of the unanticipated maneuver, Brittany Drost, 21, of Bridgewater, who was traveling close behind Ouellette in her 2013 Chevrolet sedan, could not avoid striking Ouellette’s car, Michaud said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon.
The two vehicles came to a rest in the middle of Route 1.
Michaud issued Ouellette a traffic citation for failure to yield.
Crown Ambulance personnel responded to evaluate Drost, however, she was not transported to the hospital and Ouellette was not injured, according to Michaud. Both women were wearing their seat belts.
The vehicles were towed from the scene and crews with the Maine Department of Transportation responded to remove debris from the roadway.
