Fort Fairfield offers variety of activities
The Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department has several options for youth to participate in during the summer months. For more information on registration, visit the recreation department office or call 472-3882.
T-ball is for boys and girls ages 6-8 and is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Charlie Lockhart Field behind the middle/high school. The program begins June 21 and concludes Aug. 5. If it rains, the program will take place at the community center during the first two weeks and at the elementary school gymnasium after that.
Major League baseball is for boys ages 10-12. The team will play approximately 14 games between June 21-Aug. 2, most beginning at 5:30 p.m. Team practices will be held two or three times per week.
Minor League baseball, for boys and girls ages 8 and 9, will begin playing games the week of June 21 and the season concludes the week of July 26. Games are typically played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.
A youth all-star team, consisting of 11- and 12-year-olds, will have a tryout in mid-July and will play in a County tournament in early-August, as well as a round-robin tournament in late July.
Pony League baseball, for boys ages 13-16, will play a 10-game schedule. Games begin the week of June 21 and will be held Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays through late-July. Game times are typically 1 p.m.
Babe Ruth baseball is for boys ages 16-18. A team consisting of players from neighboring communities is being formed and will play in a league throughout the summer.
Junior girls softball is for ages 9-12 and practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:15 p.m. through June 18 and Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:45 a.m. after June 18. Games will be played beginning the week of June 22 and will be played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. Tournaments in other communities will be held throughout the summer.
Senior girls softball is for 13-16 year-olds and the season runs from June 21-July 19.
Hershey Track and Field holds practices for youth ages 9-14 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through June 11. The local meet is set for Monday, June 14 from 3-4:15 p.m. Local qualifiers will participate in the regional meet in Caribou June 22 with the chance to advance to state (and world) competitions. The state meet is July 6 in Bangor.
A Zumba for Kids program is set for June 21-25 for ages 5-7 from 10-11 a.m. and ages 8 and older from 11 a.m.-noon. The cost is $5 per week, the instructor is Kim Griffeth and the site is the community center gymnasium.
Tennis lessons are for those 8 years of age and older and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:15 a.m. June 28-July 28. Lessons for beginners will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-9:15 a.m. June 29-July 29.
Swim team practices begin June 21 and will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4-5 p.m. Meets are held in neighboring communities on Wednesdays.
Two sessions of swim lessons will be offered at various times. The sessions run July 6-29 and Aug. 2-19. Lap swim and adult lessons are also offered and general swim is every day from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m.
The 21st Century Outdoor Adventure Programs are back and have expanded. All are held from 12:15-3:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with the home base being the Fort Fairfield Elementary School cafeteria.
Little Critters half-day camp for those entering grades 1-3 features wilderness exploration, nature arts and crafts and outdoor games. The four-week program meets from July 6-29.
Sun and Fun half day camp for grades 4-6 features hiking, camp crafts, outdoor games, wilderness exploration, navigation and field trips. The dates are July 6-29.
Waterways Explorers, also for grades 4-6, will feature kayaking and canoeing on local waterways. This two-week session runs the weeks of July 6 and 13.
Extreme Mountain Biking, for grades 7-10, will include learning the trail system at the Nordic Heritage Center with lots of time spent in the terrain part improving bicycling skills. This is also a two-week session offered the weeks of July 6 and 13/
The Nordic Heritage Experience for grades 4-6 will have some hiking, some biking and some geocaching. The program dates are July 19-29.
Grades 7-9 have the opportunity to participate in the Community Challenge. The one-week camp (July 26-29) includes the chance to see how the food pantry operates and an opportunity to beautify the town by planting flowers.
The Century 21 program also offers Lego Robotics for grades 6-9, drama camp for grades 2-5 and 6-9 and roller skiing camp for grades 4-6 and 7-9. For more information, contact Jacquie Martin at 540-6901.
