LIMESTONE, Maine – Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) is delighted to announce that Andrew Parker, residential instructor and MSSM yearbook adviser, was awarded the Nicole Mayhew Grant by Entourage Yearbooks in the amount of $1,500.
Parker was nominated by MSSM Dean of Faculty Deborah McGann and was selected from more than 1,300 other nominees.
Luke Shorty, MSSM executive director, noted that Parker has “transformed the yearbook process at the school by increasing student involvement and accountability”.
McGann said, “In his yearbook class, Mr. Parker assigned students specific titles and roles and developed evaluation forms with a description of major job responsibilities, performance expectations, goals, and benchmarks.”
Parker will accept the award at the Entourage annual High School Yearbook Advisors’ Conference taking place in Princeton, N.J., on July 27.
With the grant, Parker said he plans either to reduce the cost of the yearbooks for students or possibly add more pages. He said the final decision will be made by the students.
He wants to “learn strategies that will make the yearbook class better and make me better able to teach the art of making a yearbook. I am also excited to be able to get to see how the yearbook creation process works at a tour of the Entourage Yearbook headquarters.”
A Washburn native, Parker has been at MSSM for five years and for two years has served as yearbook advisor for the senior class.
He graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 2010 with a bachelor of science in physical education. He lives in the dormitory with his wife, Kelly.
