Fort Kent driver Austin Theriault was in the hunt for his fourth victory in the ARCA Racing Series on Friday night in the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana but a late-race caution flag, caused by rain, proved to be detrimental and he wound up finishing fourth.
It is the ninth top-five finish in 11 races for the series points leader.
Theriault’s closest pursuer in the points race, Dalton Sargeant of Boca Raton, Florida, won the race by getting four fresh tires during the caution which enabled him to rocket up through the pack. He passed Theriault and then race leader Michael Self with eight laps to go and pulled away for his second consecutive win.
Self wound up second and Chad Finley, who also pitted for fresh tires during the caution, maneuvered past Theriault into third.
Sargeant shaved Theriault’s points lead from 160 to 130 points with nine races remaining.
Theriault was driving a Ken Schrader Racing Ford which was sponsored by the Gardiner, Maine-based company E.J. Prescott Inc.
EJP Racing has been involved in the sport for over 20 years.
The ARCA Racing Series will resume on Friday at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania for the ModSpace 150.
