102 Years Ago – July 29, 1915

Positions filled — Harry Dudley who held the position of delivery clerk with the American Express Co., here in the county,  had been transferred to Bar Harbor where he filled a like position.

His place was filled by Lee Reed; and Ralph Gooding took charge with the same company having succeeded Russell Britton who held the position of cashier in the office of the company at Bar Harbor.

Title — Enquiries were reported as being made by the U.S. government as to the accommodations for wounded in various hospitals, including that at Bangor. As Germany was completely tied up, it may be that this had in view war with Mexico, as a preliminary to taking on Germany later.

75 Years Ago – July 23, 1942

MPG meeting — Over 300 members and guests of Maine Potato Growers, Inc., attended the tenth annual meeting of the association held at the Mapleton High School Auditorium. A banquet was served followed by business meeting and speaking program. During the business meeting, a report was given by H. E. Bryant, General Manager, revealing that Maine Potato Growers, Inc., had just closed one of the most successful season in its history with a total tonnage of 4,300 cars. New directors elected for a three year term were as follows: Harley D. Welch, Mapleton; Charles F. McIntyre, Perham; Orin H. Lovely, Westfield; Earl W. Craig, Presque Isle; and Arthur L. Carmichael, Presque Isle.

50 Years Ago – July 26, 1967

New pool slashed — The Mapleton Lion’s Club swimming pool newly built in that community was slashed by vandals sometime during the weekend, Eldridge Lovley, a Mapleton Lion’s Club member, reported. He said there were five slashes, from 18 inches to two feet long, made below the waterline.

First place — The Presque Isle Jaycee Float won first place during the Fort Fairfield Potato Blossom Festival. The float was designed by David Knapp, a Presque Isle Jaycee, who was chairman of the project.

25 Years Ago – July 22, 1992

Life on the farm — Hundreds of area residents, as well as summer tourists, invaded the Aroostook Farm in Presque Isle to participate in the annual field day activities. Among field day events were the free buckwheat pancake breakfast, farm demonstrations and tours, as well as promotional displays and exhibits.

Named to Who’s Who — Marcie Cheney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Cheney and a student at Central Aroostook High School, had been selected one of the country’s outstanding high school students and was included in “Who’s Who in American High Schools.” Her biography appeared in the 1992 edition of the publication.
