From 1993 to 2006, I was a proud resident of Houlton, My children attended Houlton schools; many of my closest friends still live in Houlton or the surrounding towns.
Given the delightful 4th of July celebrations in Houlton, I decided to drive up from central Maine and participate. For the most part, the parade was as I remembered, lots of cars and tractors; McGill’s Band; princesses; horses and four-wheelers.
What I neither remembered nor expected was the presence of Confederate flags, at least two of which were displayed by vehicles in the parade.
Wasn’t the Confederacy the single greatest threat to the United States of America? How can this symbol of trying to destroy our country be appropriate on the day we celebrate our national birthday?
I urge the parade committee to ban Confederate flags from future parades.
