PRESQUE ISLE AND ORONO, Maine – Floyd Henry Ledger, 94, a true gentleman, devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away July 21, 2017, surrounded by his children.
He was born April 30, 1923 in Worcester, MA. Floyd was inducted into the US Army in 1943. He served proudly with the 45th Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, including Anzio Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Bravery and the Combat Infantry Badge. Following his recovery from malaria, he was assigned to the POW Camp in Houlton, Maine, where he met and married, Barbara, his wife of 67 years.
Floyd loved music and enjoyed playing the drums and dancing to the Big Band sounds of his generation. He was an avid golfer and skier; one of the founders of Quoggy Jo Ski Club. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle and the Newman Center in Orono. His children can still hear him say on Sunday mornings “remember… no church, no skiing!”
Floyd made his career in the potato industry in Aroostook County, retiring from MPG in 1989.
He will be lovingly remembered by his six children and their families: James Ledger, Ann Verrill, Jack and Diana Ledger, Mary and Rick Walker, Jayne and Steve Bowler, and Kathleen and Donald Cassidy; his grandchildren Celeste Wideman, Amy and Derrick Allen, Amanda and Michael Bell, Jacob Bowler, Jason Walker, Bennett Cassidy and Brock Cassidy and five great-grandchildren. Floyd was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Roben Ledger, grandson, Daniel Ledger, daughter-in-law, Linda Haines Ledger and his only brother, John Ledger.
A private funeral mass will be held at the Newman Center. There will a reception at Dirigo Pines in Orono at 1:00 p.m. for his family and friends on July 28th. Donations in Floyd’s memory may be made to Catholic Charities, PO Box 10660, Portland, ME 04104.
