CROSS LAKE TWP, Maine — Aroostook County Deputy Sheriffs on Wednesday, July 26, arrested and charged Sylvia Hamilton, 51, of Cross Lake with burglary and two counts of aggravated criminal mischief, according to a statement from Sheriff Darrell Crandall. The charges are related to a July 13 incident on Duck Cove Road in which multiple camps were damaged.
Deputy Sheriff Corey Saucier, Sgt. Matt Cummings and Detective Peter Johnson collected physical evidence at the three camps at that time. Authorities subsequently arrested Hamilton, a nearby camp owner, based upon that evidence and a large number of interviews, according to Crandall.
Hamilton was released on bail and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Sept. 1 at Fort Kent District Court. All three charges are felony offenses, Crandall said.
Though the camps were vandalized, nothing was stolen. They were “heavily damaged,” including broken windows, destruction of personal property and spray painted grafitti, said Crandall.
Although repair estimates were incomplete at the time of Crandall’s statement, the Sheriff’s Office estimates the total damages will exceed $10,000.
