Peanut Carnival signals end of summer recreation program

HOULTON, Maine — The “Just For Kids” program, sponsored by the Houlton Recreation Department, will once again hold its annual Peanut Parade and Carnival to signal the end of summer recreation events.

This year’s parade is set for Wednesday, Aug 2, at 10 a.m. in downtown Houlton. Participants will line up at the Gentle Memorial Building and march down Main Street, around Market Square and return to the Rec Center.

The Peanut Carnival will be held the following day, Thursday, Aug. 3, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Street tennis courts. In the event of rain, the event moves inside to the basement of the Gentle Memorial Building.

The highlight of the evening will be the crowning of the 2017 Peanut King and Queen at 8 p.m. Last year’s king and queen, Isaiah Ervin and Lexi Theriault, will crown the new royalty based on the number of votes the candidates receive at the carnival.

This year’s king and queen candidates are: ages 5-6, Taylor London and Jace Morse; ages 7-8, Aliya Schools and Skyler Ramos; ages 9-10, Bryce Hubert and Ryan Perfitt; and ages 11-13, Kara Prosser and Cordel Smith.

For decades, the Houlton Recreation Department has closed out its summer program with the popular peanut carnival. Participants purchase a bag of peanuts which are then used as payment to play a variety of popular games.

This family event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Rec Center at 532-1310.
