Celebrations focus on fun with reading

PRESQUE ISLE and HOULTON, Maine — The United Way of Aroostook (UWA) and Katahdin Trust Company will host two upcoming Summer Reading Celebrations for all children in Aroostook County.

The events will take place on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle and Friday, Aug. 11, at the Houlton Recreation Center. Both events will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first of the celebration series was held in July at Fort Kent Elementary School, where just about 100 children participated.

The events are an extension of the Summer Slide Backpack Program, coordinated by UWA in partnership with the bank.  Summer Slide provided all Aroostook County first-graders with a backpack and three books for summer reading, all in the hopes of encouraging children to read throughout the summer to curb the “summer slide” of reading skills and to promote literacy.

The fun-filled Summer Reading Celebrations will include a “Toes and Tattoos Parlor,” games, prizes, arts and crafts, face painting, book giveaways, and more. Volunteers will help the United Way make these events run smoothly.
