100 Years Ago – Aug. 1, 1917

    Nominated Governor Milliken recently nominated additional physicians for the various exemption boards of the state under the provisions of the selective draft law, among them being: Dr. F. F. Biglow of Island Falls for district No. 1, Aroostook county, and Dr. H. F. Kalloch of Ft. Fairfield for district No. 2 of this county.

    Musicale A most pleasing and entertaining Musicale was held at the home of Mrs. S. L. White, for the benefit of the Red Cross fund. Those taking part were: Emmons Robinson, violinist, Mrs. J. H. Brooks, Miss Elizabeth Shaw of Houlton, and Mrs. Dunlap of Jacksonville, Fla.,. vocal soloists. It was a delightful, profitable affair and the thanks of all are due Mrs. White.

75 Years Ago – July 30, 1942

    Wanted Last year it was aluminum, last month it was rubber, and now it’s scrap phonograph records that people of Houlton and vicinity are asked to turn in to assist our armed forces in their greatest fight for freedom. Entertainers are doing their best to visit but it is evident that they can not go to distant outposts. But photograph records can be sent to any corner of the globe to bring the latest in various types of music to the boys in khaki.

    Wins new honor George E. Roach, who twice has served the Houlton Lodge of Elks as exalted ruler, has been awarded further recognition in Elkdom by his recent appointment  as District Grand Exalted Ruler of Maine East by E. Mark Sullivan of Boston, grand exalted ruler of the Elks.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 2, 1967

    The flame is out Mr.  Hawkins, who has the blacksmith shop on Mechanic Street, is retiring and closing his shop, which has been in business at the same location for the past 62 years.

    Named Lieutenant Colonel Carroll R. Graham, son of Mrs. Velva A. Graham of Houlton, has assumed command of the 346th Tactical Airlift Squadron at Dyess AFB, Abilene, Tex. The 24-year service veteran was graduated from Hodgdon High School. Since entering the Air Force, he has attended Baylor University and received hi B. A. degree in international relations at Syracuse University.

25 Years Ago – July 29, 1992

   Planting flowers Members of the Houlton Garden Club planted flowers around the Boy and the Boot statue in Pearce Park. Those on-hand to plant were: Ralph Saunders, who rototilled the flower beds; Brittany Benn, Ann Callnan, Mildred Madigan, Joyce Saunders and Catherine Bell.

   Gathering — Republican U.S. Senator William Cohen was guest speaker recently at the Houlton Fire Station. Also in attendance were: Maine State Senator Margaret Ludwig and two Republican candidates for Maine House of Representatives; Dean Clukey and Henry Joy of Island Falls.
