Summer is a time for campfires, barbeques and fireworks. It can also be a time of extreme fire danger and heat-related medical emergencies. Presque Isle Fire Department would like to share a few safety tips so that you and your family are able to safely enjoy the fun “In the City “sun.
Fireworks safety
Whether you are shooting off fireworks or lighting a few sparklers, you should be prepared for anything. When lighting fireworks or sparklers, make sure there is nothing flammable around your area and keep fireworks away from houses and other structures. Make sure to keep a garden hose, water bucket, or fire extinguisher nearby in the event anything sparks a blaze. Should a fire occur, dial 9-1-1 immediately.
Campfire safety
Check your surroundings before building a fire. Choose a location where the fire will not spread. Make sure that your campfire is well contained, either in a pit or surrounded by rocks. Always extinguish your fire after you are done. Having a shovel, a charged garden hose, or a fire extinguisher handy is a very good idea. If your campfire burns out of control, immediately call 9-1-1.
Barbeque safety
Start with a clean barbecue grill and a safe area to cook in. Move the barbecue away from your home and the overhanging roof. If using propane, ensure that the connection to the bottle is tight and there are no leaks in the rubber hoses. Always open your gas grill before lighting. Stay safe and never leave a grill unattended. Make sure the barbecue has cooled off before storing. As always, in the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Medical emergencies
Summer also brings health concerns with lots of outside activities and high temperatures. Heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke are all heat-related illnesses that family and friends should be aware of. Some signs may include heavy sweating, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. Some victims may experience only one of these symptoms while others may have more.
During hot weather, increase fluid intake regardless of activity level. Use shaded areas for rest periods. The harder the exertion the more frequent the rest period should be. Infants, children and those who are over the age of 65 are at the greatest risk of a heat-related illness. Do not ignore symptoms, dial 911 and get help immediately.
Knowing what to do in a crisis is important for everyone. Take the right precautions and always remember if you have a medical emergency or a fire, dial 9-1-1. Presque Isle Fire Department wants you to have fun “In the City “sun.
