WASHBURN, Maine — A three-on-three basketball tournament and a road race are being held to help raise funds for two local families facing significant medical expenses.
A basketball tourney, named the “Thompson Tournament,” is set for Aug. 12 at Washburn District High School. There will be junior high, high school and adult divisions in the male, female and co-ed categories. Teams may consist of between three and five players.
The junior high division begins at 2 p.m., the high school division at 3:30 p.m. and the adult division at 6 p.m.
Quintin Thompson is a Washburn District High School student who was involved in a serious car accident July 15.
The cost is $20 per team in the school divisions and $35 for adults. Registration forms can be obtained by calling 455-4501. Forms then should be mailed to WDHS, 1359 Main St., Washburn, ME 04786. Interested teams also can have a representative contact the school at 455-4501 to sign up.
The Washburn August Festival 3K Road Race will take place Sunday, Aug. 20, beginning at the Washburn Elementary School parking lot. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. A charity walk will take place five minutes after the start of the race. Awards will be presented after all participants have finished.
The registration fee is $8 and donations will be accepted. The first 40 to register will receive a T-shirt. Call Kolbie Churchill at 551-5624 for additional information.
Proceeds from the road race will benefit Thompson and Kelsey Farr, a WDHS graduate and former cross country manager recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, who is undergoing treatment.
