LONA MACKENZIE, ISLAND FALLS – Lona MacKenzie, of Island Falls, 94, wife of the late Charles MacKenzie, left this earth peacefully at Gardiner Health Care in Houlton, to go to her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Friday, August 4th, 2017.
Lona was born in Smyrna, Maine, on March 29, 1923 to Percy L. and Mahala (Fowler) Chute. Growing up in Oakfield, she graduated from Oakfield High in the spring of 1941. Her claim to fame while in school was being a star on the girls’ basketball team and most importantly out-shooting the boys at foul shooting. On December 13th, 1941 she married the love of her life Charles and they spent nearly 71 years together before his passing in July 2012.
She was a stay at home mom and raised four boys with loving care, Leslie, Richard, Keith, and Darren. She loved her family and friends with agape love and would do anything for them in her power. She was a wonderful cook and loved to knit wool socks and mittens for us boys for the winter time. In her later years, she fell in love with the Red Sox and got to see them win three world series. Her favorite player was Johnny Damon of the 2004 team. In 2005, Les purchased tickets and she and Les and Keith went to Fenway to watch the Sox play and she had a great time although Johnny was out injured that night.
She and Dad loved to go camping and did so every chance they got with friends and family. They also spent several winters in Florida and one in Tuson, Arizona.
The love and pride of her life besides her children were her grandchildren. She loved them to the moon and back and loved every time they came to visit or went to visit them.
Lona was predeceased by her son, Richard, husband Charles, her parents, and a brother Paul Chute, and three sisters, Erma Crandall, Edna Morrissey, and Olga Gehrke.
She is survived by her sons, Keith of Island Falls, ME, Leslie and his wife Norma of Sunset, ME, and Darren and his wife Myra of San Diego, CA, her grandson Mark and his wife Christina Triano and their son Dylan of Longwood, FL, granddaughters Sally MacKenzie and her husband Ben Darkin of Sydney, Australia, and Jenny MacKenzie of Sebastopol, CA, and several nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Lona will be sorely missed but never forgotten by all who knew her and loved her sweet demeanor. The family would like to extend much loving thanks to the Angelic care given to our sweet mom by the staff at Gardiner Healthcare Facility in Houlton and to Dr. Aboulish and Dr. Susman. Your love and compassion is beyond measure.
A graveside service of remembrance will be held at 10:00 a.m. August 19th, 2017 at the Island Falls Cemetery with Pastor Ben Greene officiating. A time of fellowship immediately following at the United Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Agape Food Pantry, C/O Keith MacKenzie, PO Box 238, Island Falls, ME 04747.
