Golf meeting set for Thursday
Students at Caribou and Presque Isle high schools interested in playing on the varsity golf team this fall are encouraged to attend an organizational meeting set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Caribou High School gymnasium.
The two schools are combining to form one team, which will be called “Carlisle,” and compete in the Maine Principals Association-sanctioned activity. Practices will alternate between Caribou Country Club and Presque Isle Country Club and begin later this month.
Marc Weeks, who served as the coach of the Caribou squad the past two seasons, will be the coach of the newly-formed Carlisle squad.

Any-deer permit applications available
Applications for 2017 any-deer (antlerless) permit lottery are now available online from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
To apply online, visit www.maine.gov/online/nedeer/. Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017.
It is free to apply for the any-deer permit lottery. The drawing will be held on Sept. 8, 2017 and results will be posted on the Department’s website.
Deer hunting season (firearms) begins with Youth Deer Hunting Day on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017. Youth may take a buck statewide or an antlerless deer only in the wildlife management districts where any-deer permits will be issued this fall.
This year, Maine Residents Only Day is on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 and regular firearms season for deer runs Oct. 30 through Nov. 25, 2017. Note: this year, a nonresident who owns 25 or more acres of land in Maine and leaves land open to hunting, holds a valid hunting license, and is not otherwise prohibited by law, may hunt deer on the Resident only day.

Four to be inducted into UMPI hall of fame
PRESQUE ISLE — Four University of Maine at Presque Isle graduates will receive the university’s highest athletic honor this fall when they are inducted into the Owls’ Athletic Hall of Fame.
Claudia Labrie, Rachel Larlee Bousquet, Adam Smith and Jeremy Von Oesen will be inducted during a dinner and ceremony taking place Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Campus Center. It is being held as part of UMPI’s Homecoming Weekend.
Labrie, who graduated in 1987, was a standout basketball player for the Owls, while Larlee, a 2004 graduate, also starred on the basketball court for UMPI and did some coaching afterwards, including at the varsity level at Foxcroft Academy.
Smith played several sports at the university, graduating in 1985. He has had a successful coaching career in the Yarmouth area. Von Oesen, a 2004 graduate, was a brilliant soccer goalie for the Owls and currently coaches both the women’s and men’s soccer teams at Unity College.
3 divisions compete in kart races
Northern Maine Karting Association racing continued at Spud Speedway Friday, July 28, with ideal weather conditions greeting both the contestants and fans.

Blacked Out Window Tint Kids Karts: first, Kayden Haines, Caribou; and second, Parker Bosse, Limestone.
Aroostook Trusses Junior Cage Karts: first, Gage Theriault, Limestone; and second, Ronnie-Lynn Kelly, Presque Isle.
Aroostook Savings and Loan Senior Cage Karts: first, Nate Haney, Caribou; second, Tom Hale, Westmanland; and third, Brandon Masse, Caribou.
Adult trips planned
The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department is offering trips later this month and in early September for adults.
A tour of the Edmundston Botanical Gardens and the Petit Sault Craft Brewery is planned for Aug. 22. A kayaking outing on the Aroostook River from Caribou to Fort Fairfield takes place Aug. 26.
A trip to the Grand Falls Gorge, followed by a riverboat excursion, is set for Sept. 1.
Each trip requires pre-registration and there is a fee. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. For more information, call the recreation office at 493-4224.
