Patten pioneer days in full swing

PATTEN, Maine — The annual Patten Pioneer Days celebration is now in full swing in the community, with events continuing through Sunday, Aug. 13.

The following is a listing of events slated in the community.

 

Wednesday, Aug. 9

11 a.m. — watermelon challenge.

1 p.m. — Ice cream social/ coloring contest at Patten Town Office.

1 p.m. — Outdoor concert at Mountain Heights.

3 p.m. — Watermelon eating contest at the park for ages 4-16 sponsored by Ellis Market.

8:30 p.m. — Light parade. Line up at the rec and drive your bike or scooter wagon or any other item you can make light up and walk it to the playground.

 

Thursday, Aug .10

9 a.m.-4 p.m. — Book sale at Veterans Memorial Library.

10 a.m. — ATV Hands-On course for ages 10-15 at the Hanger Restaurant. Sponsored by Maine ATV Club.

Noon — Teddy Bear Picnic at the park. Ages 7 and younger, bring your favorite teddy bear and a picnic lunch. Smokey the Bear will be on hand. Sponsored by Deb’s Deli.

1 p.m. — Drawing contest of local businesses at the park. Come pick a business out of the bucket and present it at Saturday’s festival to be voted on for a chance to win a gift card. Ages 10-15.

2 p.m.  — Kids’ Cooking Contest at the Recreation Center. There will be three categories — pies, cookies and cake. Participants will be broken up into age groups that day for judging. Entries must be made by kids.

3 p.m. — Chili and beans contest at the Rec Center.

4:30 p.m. — Rock Decorating at the park.

4:30-6:30 p.m. Spaghetti supper at the Methodist Church, followed by a sacred dance.

5 p.m. — Lumbermen’s Museum, Slide movie.

6 p.m. — Kickball at the park.

 

Friday, Aug. 11

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Book sale at Memorial Library.

1-3 p.m. — Historical Society Building, the Patten Area Women’s Club will have on display photos and stories of old homes in Patten. Marilyn Somers will play old songs for all to enjoy.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. — Community Cookout at the Red Moose parking lot. Cost is $3 per person. Sponsored by local businesses and the Recreation Department.

1:30-3 p.m. — Foul Shooting Contest at Patten Drug Company for grades 2-6.

2-4 p.m. — Patten Historical Society presentation, sponsored by Women’s Club.

4 p.m. — Cornhole tournament at Shin Pond Village, $10 per team with a 50/50 split prize.

4-7 p.m. — Pioneer Barbecue at Shin Pond Village. Sponsored by Project Graduation 2018.

5-7 p.m. — Silent Auction at Shin Pond Village, sponsored by Mt. Chase Fire Department.

9 p.m. — Fireworks at Shin Pond Village. Sponsored by Mt. Chase Fire Department.

9 p.m.-1 a.m. — Dance at the Shin Pond Pub. 21-and-older ID required.

 

Saturday, Aug. 12

9 a.m.-2 p.m. — K and C second annual Car Show. All cars must be registered between 9 a.m.-noon. Registration is free. Call 528-4401 for more information.

10 a.m. — Parade.

10 a.m. — Pie Sale at United Methodist Church. Whole pies for sale as well as slices of pies a la mode! Come enjoy a slice and coffee or tea.

10 a.m. — Flea Market/Craft Sale. Set up at 7:30 a.m. $15 per space. Must bring own table.

10 a.m. — Patten Recreation Department Hot dog stand (hot dogs, sausages, chili, pretzels and cold drinks).

11 a.m. — Doughboys and nachos at the park. Proceeds go to 2018 Project Graduation.

11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Bean hole dinner at Patten Lumbermen’s’ Museum.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. –Kids Carnival. Cost of bracelet is $10 per child and includes bounce house, games, slip and slide, three-person race, cotton candy, snow cones, face painting, popcorn, glitter tattoos, pony rides and more. Lots of prizes and golden tickets to be won.

Noon — Volleyball tournament at the volleyball court in park. Cost is $20 per team. Teams must have at least one female.

4-6 p.m. Mason steak dinner at the KVHC parking lot, sponsored by Katahdin Lodge No. 98.

4:30 p.m. — Winner’s announced for prizes at the gazebo in the park.

5 p.m. — Home run derby at the ball field.

8-12 p.m. — Town dance at the park (BYOB).

 

Sunday, Aug. 13

9 a.m.-noon — Poker Run. Registration at the Hanger. Cost is $10/hand. A participant’s dinner follows from noon to 4 p.m. All cards must be turned in by 4 p.m. This is a Charity Event-All proceeds will go to Wreaths Across America in memory of Dustin Harris.

9 a.m. — Community Church Service followed by a prayer chain in the park.

Noon — Co-ed Softball Tournament in the park. Cost is $30/team.
