Pool classes begin Aug. 17
The Presque Isle Indoor Pool is currently taking registration for the Aug. 17 to Oct. 24 session. The following is a breakdown of classes offered:
Parent/Child (ages 6 months-3 years) — This class includes basic skills that prepare young children to be comfortable in the water. This class will not make your child an independent swimmer; instead this class will prepare your child to enter the Learn-to-Swim Program. Skills learned include getting adjusted to the water environment, showing comfort on their front and back positions with assistance, submerging with assistance and changing body positions in the water. These classes are Tuesday at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.
3 year-old classes — This class is designed for preschool aged children who have never been in a swim class but are ready to hold on to the wall and be in a pool without a parent. The focus is on the fundamentals of floating and aquatic locomotion skills. In order to move to the next level, students must be comfortable putting their face in the water for three or more seconds. These classes are Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.,Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Preschool (age 4 years) — Preschool aquatics teaches age appropriate water and safety skills in a positive, logical progression beginning with fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. Skills learned are the same as are taught at levels 1 and 2. These skills include independent water entry, front and back glides and combined arm and leg actions. Children are required to stay in the preschool program until they turn six years of age. These classes are Monday at 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at 9 a.m. or 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., Thursday at 9 a.m., 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. or 10 a.m.
Level 1 (ages 6 or older years) — Working on comfort in the water and entering and exiting the pool by themselves. Skills learned include blowing bubbles, getting the face and head in the water, floating on front and back with support, and recovering to a standing position; alternating and simultaneous arm and leg motion on front and back. These classes at Tuesday at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m., Wednesday at 3 p.m., Thursday at 4 p.m. or 6 p.m., and Saturday at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m.
Level 2 — Skills learned include front and back floats, unsupported for 5 seconds, then recover to a standing position; front and back glides for two body lengths and combined arm and leg actions on the front and back for 15 feet. These classes are Tuesday at 3 p.m. or 6 p.m., Wednesday at 1 p.m., Thursday at 4 p.m. or 6 p.m., and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Levels 3 and 4 — Skills learned include survival and back floats and treading water for 30 seconds, front and back glides with two different kicks and combined arm and leg actions on front and back for 15 feet. Improve skills and increase endurance on strokes learned in previous levels, including front and back crawl for 25 yards, elementary backstrokes, breaststroke, sidestroke with scissor kick and butterfly stroke for 15 yards. Skills learned include head-first entries, survival swimming and treading water using two kicks. Classes are Tuesday at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., Wednesday at 2 p.m. or 6 p.m., Thursday at 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Levels 5 and 6 — Increased endurance, coordination and refinement of strokes, front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and flip turns. Refine strokes so student swims with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Skills include introduction to other aquatic activities; areas of focus include personal water safety, fitness, swimming and diving. These classes are Monday at 6 p.m., Tuesday at 4 p.m., Wednesday at 2 p.m., Thursday 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Shallow water aerobics — This shallow water workout includes calisthenics style movements with variations of upper and lower body resistive moves. You will march, jog, kick, jacks and jump through the water to create resistance to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance and flexibility. Each instructor uses his/her creativity to keep the pace moving and the activities interesting. As the participant, you determine your own intensity by deciding how hard to manipulate the water. (50 minutes) Appropriate for individuals who have moderate to good fitness levels, individuals with controlled medical conditions who can manage some impact, individuals who enjoy intense use of all muscle groups, athletes and swimmers looking for an aqua alternative. These classes are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Aqua Zumba —This is the aqua fitness program everyone has been waiting for. Zumba has taken over the aerobic industry and now we are in the pool. Aqua Zumba is a fun, intense workout with great music and high energy. This class is Monday at 6 p.m.
Adult lessons: Lessons consist of 50-minute sessions that are designed to offer an individual style program without the cost of private lessons. New comers can put their fears aside as our highly trained instructors gently ease you in and around the pool at your own pace. Each level has an outline of what can be covered. But unlike children’s lessons, you the participant, will get to choose what you learn. For example, if you sign up for Level 1 but do not want to learn to swim on your back, no problem. You can move up through the levels only learning the skills to swim on your front.
The idea is for you to tell us what you want to learn and within each class you will get the individual instruction needed to learn the skills you have chosen. All skills can be modified to suit your needs so don’t be afraid to let us know what you are looking for. These classes are Monday at 9 a.m. or Wednesday at 7 p.m.
