The weather was beautiful for the 28th annual County Open golf tournament and gala event Saturday and Sunday at Houlton Community Golf Course and VaJoWa Golf Course in Island Falls.

The thunderstorms and rain on Sunday did not impact the tournament. The County Open is one of the largest fundraisers for the Health Services Foundation and Houlton Regional Hospital. About $20,000 was raised for the foundation.

The stroke play tournament in Houlton Saturday featured an exciting finish as two players — Jerry York and Warren Walker — tied with one under par 71s. York and Walker battled stroke for stroke through five playoff holes before York was crowned the champion.

Chuck Schmiedel finished third with a 72 in the Men’s A Division. Net winners were 1, Mike Fleming, 64; 2, Adam Derosier, 67; and 3, Ryan Dee, 67.

In the B flight, Bruce Avery was the overall winner with an 80, followed by Bob Gray, 82; and Marty Bouchard 83. Net winners were: 1, David Edgar, 66; 2, Greg Palmer, 66; and 3, Tom Moakler, 68.

In the C flight, Dewey Dewitt was the overall champ with a 93, followed by Steve Henderson, 94; and Scott Spurling, 98. Net winners were Tim Rooney, 71; Ben Lynds, 71; and Joe McAuliffe, 79.

In the women’s competition Lou Ann Dwyer outdistanced the competition with her round of 83. Second-place went to Sarah Moody, 88; followed by Misty Marino, 92. Net winners were: Sue Waite-York, 69; Nancy Thompson, 74; and Cait Dwyer-Cain, 75.

Troy Adams won the longest drive for men on the second hole, while Dwyer-Cain had the longest drive for women.

In Sunday’s scramble at VaJoWa the team of Warren Walker, Clay Halliday, Joe McAuliffe, and Ray Mailman were crowned champs with a 58. Second place went to Sam Henderson, Matt Day, Tyler Putnam and Brandon McCarthy, 60; and third place went to Alex Donovan, Ryan Dee, Drew Marino and Cameron Clark, 61.

The top net prize went to the team of Joe Clukey, Rhonda Clukey, Jessica Walker, and Tim Prescott, with a 52.8. Second net went to David Tuttle, Kevin Tuttle, Kody Tuttle and Ben Tuttle, 53.4; and third net went to Steve Hanning, Ashley Wallace, Chris Wallace and Jennifer Wallace, 54.3.
