100 Years Ago – Aug. 22, 1917

    New purchase The Putnam Hardware Co. have added to their equipment a large Reotruck which will be used for their gasoline and oil delivery. 

    Soon to be ready The concrete walls and foundation for the Bowlodrome addition are about finished and will soon be ready for the new alleys to be installed by the Brunswick-Balke-Calender Co.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 20, 1942

    Celebrates birthday S. L. White celebrated his 80th birthday Wednesday by going to Woodstock with Frank A. Peabody and Frank C. Clark and playing a round of golf on the Woodstock Golf Course.

    Taking a course Miss Viola Carr arrived home Friday from Presque Isle, where she has been taking a special three weeks; course in mathematics and public school music at Aroostook State Normal School.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 23 , 1967

    Trophy winner Miss Ellen Maher, 13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Maher, received four trophies, which she won at the International Baton Championship recently at St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. One of the trophies was presented to her as International Grand Champion.

    Honored Bert Wetmore, chief of the Houlton Fire Department and a member of the Department for the past 50 years, was the guest of honor at a surprise testimonial dinner at the Parkview Restaurant. Chief Wetmore was presented with a special plaque by Assistant Chief Fred Johnston.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 19, 1992

   Transportation The Aroostook Area Agency on Aging gave a grant to the Shiretown Senior Transport. Drivers and coordinators at the presentation on Aug. 17, were: Mary Foss, Shirley Aube, of the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, presented a check to Margaret Ingraham, chairman of the Shiretown Senior Transport, Patrice Hipsley, Edgar McCormick, Merlin Graham, Ruth Monk and Julia Craigs.

   Summer readers — Receiving awards for the summer reading program held at Cary Library under the direction of Renee Wilkins were: Alicia Jewel and Daniel Sussman, also top fundraisers,  Gregory Jewell and Julia Forbush, two of the top readers for the summer reading program.
