The varsity soccer slate for Wednesday, Aug. 23 is highlighted by a key early-season girls’ game in Mars Hill between the defending Class D state champion Ashland Hornets and the Central Aroostook Panthers.
The two teams met in last year’s semifinals and Ashland’s win allowed them to take all three meetings on the regular season.
Central Aroostook has won its first two games of the year by scores of 4-2 over Washburn and 8-1 over Fort Fairfield, while Ashland played its opener against Easton Monday and prevailed, 8-1.
The Panthers-Hornets clash begins at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the boys’ matchup between Central Aroostook (2-0) and Ashland (0-1).
The Washburn squads take on Wisdom for the second time in five days. Both matches begin at 4 p.m. in St. Agatha. The teams met in Washburn Friday, Aug. 18, with the Beavers taking the girls’ game, 4-1, and the Pioneers claiming a 5-0 victory in the boys’ contest.
The Beaver girls enter with a 2-1 record and the Washburn boys are currently 0-3.
In action Tuesday, Aug. 22, the Fort Kent teams were on the road for their opening soccer matches of the season and both the Warrior boys and girls turned in impressive performances en route to victories.
The Warrior boys came through with a 2-1 overtime win over the Fort Fairfield Tigers, while Fort Kent blanked the Tiger girls, 10-0.
In the boys’ contest, Niko Naranja scored two minutes into the first overtime period to allow the Warriors to come out on top. Dylan Bernier opened the scoring for Fort Kent with 19 minutes left in the first half, while the Tigers’ Dawson Watson tied it off an Alex Sprague assist three minutes into the second half.
Coach John Ala’s Tiger boys are now 1-2. They went undefeated last year before falling to Bangor Christian in the Class D North regional championship game. Fort Fairfield had won the state title in 2015.
The team had opened with a 10-0 win over Washburn, but then lost at home to Central Aroostook Aug. 17 prior to Tuesday’s defeat.
Coach Jocelyn MacDonald’s Tiger girls are now 0-3 on the season. The squad began their slate by falling to Washburn in overtime, 6-5, and then to Central Aroostook, 8-1.
