WASHBURN – Wendell Sabin Doody, Sr., 78, passed away at a local hospital on Sunday August 13, 2017. Wendell was born in Caribou, Maine, April 17th, 1939 to Hermon and Sadie Doody of Washburn. He was a graduate of Washburn High School, class of 1957.
Wendell married Joyce Turner of Washburn on April 24, 1958 and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage. Wendell worked for Maine Public Service for 32 years, retiring in 2001.
His retirement years were filled with following his grandchildren’s activities going to countless ball games, school programs and recitals. He loved to work with his hands and had a reputation for being able to build or fix anything. Any advice he gave always proved to be the best advice. He was a man of quiet humility and generosity of spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand. He gave his family the greatest gift any parent could of loving them so well.
Wendell was predeceased by his parents Herman and Sadie (Sarah) Doody of Washburn, a brother Galen Doody, and an infant son Edward Wendell Doody.
In addition to his wife Joyce, he is survived by a daughter, Kathie Davis and husband Bob of Presque Isle, a son Mitchell Doody of Saco, a son Wendell Doody, Jr. and wife Lottie of Wade, a son Adam Doody and wife Julie of Washburn and a daughter Amanda and husband Jason Fitzgerald of Lyman.
Wendell was blessed by nine grandchildren; Emily Davis and husband Dan Peers, Betsy Davis and husband Lem Randall, Mitchell Davis and wife Katelynn, Nathan Doody and wife Paige, Ethan Doody and wife Kasandra, Jacob Doody and fiancé Kylie Nichols, Olivia Doody, Natalie Doody and Keira Fitzgerald. His double blessings came in the form of seven great-grandchildren: Charlie and Sadie Peers, Maverick and Jaymes Randall, Elijah Davis and Leah and Charlotte Doody. Also surviving Wendell is his youngest brother Wallace Doody and wife Alice of Washburn, sister-in-law Carol Doody of Caribou and a special cousin and friend, Buz Spooner of Boynton Beach, Florida.
A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle. There will be no calling hours. Committal will be private for children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association at lung.org or to the Aroostook House of Comfort, P.O. Box 867, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
The family wishes to thank Aroostook Cancer Care, Dr. Thomas Macharia, the doctors and nurses of TAMC who took such good care of Dad during his many hospital stays over the last four years and Dr. Nancy O’Neil, whose skill and compassion allowed Dad to enjoy a quality of life in his last months that he and our family wouldn’t have had otherwise.
