CARIBOU, Maine — A new Family Dollar store opened roughly two months ago in Caribou’s Skyway Plaza, and held their grand opening in July.
Daniel Rosenberg is the plaza’s owner. His father and grandfather built the shopping center nearly half a century ago. While local store officials said they could not comment, Rosenberg says he is “very proud that Family Dollar has opened a 10,000-square-foot store at Skyway Plaza,” and that “from seeing the amount of cars in the parking lot,” he believes the business is very successful thus far.
Family Dollar is the newest addition to the Skyway Plaza, which also houses Save-A-Lot, the Jade Palace restaurant, and a Department of Health and Human Services building.
Rosenberg said buildings in the plaza are almost all rented, and alluded to more growth in the future.
“I have a couple leads I’m working on right now,” Rosenberg said, “and if you look at the volume of traffic in that lot, you see a strong synergy amongst the tenants we have. I think it’s good for Caribou.”
A number of County contractors helped build the new store, including Houlton Contractor Peter Chase of Buildings Etcetera, Civil Engineer Tim Roix of B R Smith Associates in Presque Isle, and subcontractors County Electric and Mechanical Services.
The new Family Dollar opened soon after the closure of a Sweden Street Dollar Express store. However, many in Caribou may refer to the former Dollar Express store as Family Dollar, since they took over as part of a Federal Trade Commission requirement once Family Dollar was obtained by Dollar Tree in 2015, according to the Wall Street Journal.
