With cool mornings and warm sunny days, more than 2,000 college students are starting their fall semester this week at Presque Isle’s two main higher education institutions.
Northern Maine Community College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle welcomed new and returning students to their campuses on Monday, Aug. 28.
For some, this year will be the last year of college before heading into the job market or seeking an advanced degree. For others, career aspirations and education are still in the early stages of development.
Austin Libby, a sophomore at UMPI, transferred from the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus this semester to major in physical education and pursue a teaching career.
“I worked at a daycare for three years and I enjoyed it,” said Libby, who grew up in Gardiner. “Teaching kids really interests me and I don’t want to work in an office.”
Kaylee Michaud, also from Gardiner, is starting her freshman year at UMPI, majoring in biology with a pre-medicine concentration.
“My goal is to go to grad school to become an optometrist,” Michaud said.
