102 Years Ago – Sept. 2, 1915

In the business harness — The many friends of Mr. Sidney Graves were glad to learn that he was in the business harness again, he had bought out the business of T. H. Belyea and Co. in the brick block opposite the Postoffice. Mr. Graves planned to carry a full and complete line of hardware.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 27, 1942

Williams appointed — Elmer L. Williams was appointed division manager of the Armour Fertilizer Works for the State of Maine. He succeeded the late A. F. Detweiler. “Spike” had been affiliated with the Armour Company since July 15, 1923, serving since 1931 as divisional credit manager.

Markee becomes manager — Dennis J. Markee appointed manager of Aroostook Cut-Rate Store on Main Street. Well known to the citizens, in 1907, he accepted his first position with McEachren and Thibodeau which he held for three years.

50 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1967

Forklift technician — Richard C. Davis of Presque Isle had been appointed an additional service technician in the Aroostook Divisional office of Maine Materials Handling. R. Neil Buxton, branch manager of the firm, reported that the name of Lee H. Long H. Long Associates Inc., long known as the New England representatives for Yale and Towne Corp, had been purchased by Parts Distributors Inc. of Portland, and will operate under the name of Maine Materials Handling Division of Parts Distributors Inc.

United Fund chair — Sydney K. Graves, president of the Presque Isle United Fund announced that Burton Tompkins Sr. accepted the position of general chairman of the 1967-68 United Fund campaign.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 26, 1992

Top honors — The eighth annual United Way Open golf tournament, sponsored by the Aroostook Life Underwriters Association, was played on August 8, at the Aroostook Valley Country Club at Fort Fairfield. More than 70 golfers competed in the event. Brent Hatch of New Brunswick shot a 73 to capture the tournament championship. Division winners were: first division, low net, Jere Whitten; second division, low gross, Scott Clark; low net, Steve Burtchell; third division, low gross, Ray Hews; low net, Gary Schools; women’s division, low gross, Bea Giberson; and low net, Jennifer Hersey.

Winner — Tom Murray, the sixth-grade, son of Lisa Murray of Presque Isle, won a telephone by guessing the correct number of beans in a jar displayed at the Aroostook  County Republican Committee booth during the Northern Maine Fair.
