CA boys and Ashland girls unbeaten in ‘D’ soccer

The Central Aroostook boys and Ashland girls soccer teams took undefeated records into matches played Tuesday. Both squads had won their first three matches, with the Panthers playing Southern Aroostook in Dyer Brook and the Hornets traveling to St. Agatha to meet up against the Pioneers.

While some local teams have already played up to five games, the Presque Isle squads will finally get things underway Saturday when they make the trip to the University of Maine at Orono to take on John Bapst. The girls’ game is at 11 a.m., with the boys following at 1 p.m.

Summaries of matches played from Aug. 22-28 follow:

Washburn girls 2, Hodgdon 1 (OT) — Kassie Farley scored off a Raegyn Chavez assist with two minutes left in the first overtime period, giving the Beavers their third win of the season Monday in Washburn.

The Beavers’ Madison Miller opened the scoring with a header off a Farley assist 22 minutes into the match before Hodgdon’s Emma Drew provided the equalizer with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Madison Merritt had the assist on the scoring play.

It was Hodgdon’s first match of the season, while the Beavers played their fifth and are now 3-2.

Carly Bragg made five saves on seven shots in goal for Washburn, while Hodgdon goalkeeper Autumn Ganzel saved 10 of 30 shots.

“The team played with a lot of heart,” said Washburn coach Marcie Barbarula. “They never gave up and played very well together.”

Hodgdon boys 6, Washburn 0 — Josh Palmer and Josh Foster scored early goals and the Hodgdon Hawks continued their offensive onslaught with four more tallies to take their regular season opener by a score of 6-0 in Washburn Monday.

Dylan Oliver netted a pair of goals and had an assist, while Wyatt Foster and Bobby Ramsey each contributed a goal. Josh Foster finished with three assists. Michael Sanders recorded the shutout in goal for Hodgdon.

The Beavers fell to 0-5 on the season. Josh Jackson was Washburn’s goalkeeper.

Ashland girls 14, Fort Fairfield 0 — At Ashland Saturday, the Hornet girls cruised to their third consecutive win to begin the season. Shelby Stolze and Amber Chasse both registered hat tricks and Morgan Doughty scored twice and racked up four assists. Single goals were scored by Micayla Driscoll, Jamie Poulin, Danni Carter, Kassandra Nelson, Olivia Tardie and Willow Hall.

Goalkeeper Megan Cote needed to make just one save in recording her second shutout of the season. The Tiger girls fell to 0-4.

Fort Fairfield boys 5, Ashland 0 — The visiting Tigers shut out the Hornets Saturday as Isaac Cyr tallied twice and assisted on another. Jonah Daigle, Wyatt Keegan and Chris Gill also scored for the Tigers, now 2-2. Ashland’s record dipped to 0-3.

Washburn girls 4, Van Buren 0 — Madison Miller had a hand in all of her team’s goals in the triumph on Saturday at Van Buren. She assisted on a goal by eighth-grader Lura Page to open the scoring and then was credited with the assist on junior Alexis Carney’s goal later in the first half. Miller then scored two goals herself after intermission, one off a Page assist. Carly Bragg saved five of nine shots for the shutout in goal.

Van Buren boys 2, Washburn 1 — The Beaver boys’ record fell to 0-4 following Saturday’s loss to the Crusaders. Luc Perreault scored the game-winning goal with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Dylan Henry scored Washburn’s goal and Noah Pelletier had the other Van Buren goal.

Easton boys 4, Wisdom 3 — The Easton boys handed the Wisdom Pioneers their first loss Friday, capturing a 4-3 victory. Kooper Kinney, Isaac Currier, Ryan West and Gavin Pangburn were the goal scorers for the Bears, who improved to 2-1.

Dylan Weyeneth scored two goals and Corey Franck had the other for 3-1 Wisdom. Easton goalkeeper Collin Sotomayor saved five of nine shots and the Pioneers’ Jack Guerrette saved nine of 17.

Wisdom girls 4, Easton 3 (OT) — The Bears’ girls team is still looking for its first win after falling in overtime to Wisdom Friday, 4-3. Bailey Bellefleur notched the game winner in the second overtime period.

Delia Bonner scored all three Easton goals, one off an assist from Matigan Dow. The Bears fell to 0-3, while the Pioneers improved to 3-1.

Central Aroostook boys 6, Ashland 0 — Six different players scored goals in the blanking of Ashland last Wednesday in Mars Hill. Hunter Wardwell, Zach O’Leary, Ben Thomas, Ethan Pryor, Taylor Campbell and Colby Kingsbury all found the back of the net for the Panthers, who improved to 3-0.

“Having six different players score was the thing I was most happy about,” said CA coach Wallace Endy.

Brayden Bradbury recorded the shutout in goal for CA and Steven Bellanceau handled the goalkeeping chores for the Hornets.

Wisdom girls 4, Washburn 1 — Last Wednesday’s game in St. Agatha was an exact turnaround from the Aug. 18 game in Washburn. The Pioneers won the latest match after losing by the same score five days earlier.

Bailey Bellefleur recorded a hat trick and Sydney Dumond netted the other goal for the Pioneers, who improved to 2-1. Madison Miller scored off a Farley assist for Washburn.

Wisdom boys 4, Washburn 2 — The Beavers scored their first goals of the season last Wednesday, but still lost to the host Pioneers.

Daniel Arce had a goal and assisted on another by Konner Jordan as Washburn ended its scoring drought which spanned the team’s first three matches. Jake Roy scored twice for 3-0 Wisdom.

Fort Kent boys 2, Fort Fairfield 1 (OT) — Niko Naranja scored two minutes into the first overtime period to allow the Warriors to come out on top last Tuesday in Fort Fairfield. Dylan Bernier opened the scoring for Fort Kent with 19 minutes left in the first half, while the Tigers’ Dawson Watson tied it off an Alex Sprague assist three minutes into the second half.

Fort Kent girls 10, Fort Fairfield 0 — Coach Jocelyn MacDonald’s Tiger girls fell to 0-3 with the lopsided home loss to the Warriors last Tuesday.
