Graves and Beckum repeat as Labor Day road race winners

CARIBOU, Maine — Last year’s top male and female finishers were able to repeat at the annual Caribou Labor Day 8K Road Race, which this year included only 24 runners.

The event, held Monday, Sept. 4, on a course that began and ended at the Caribou High School track, saw Evan Graves of Caribou once again capture the men’s and overall title with a time of 27 minutes and 18 seconds. He was 41 seconds faster than runner-up P. J. Gorneault of Caribou, who finished in 27:59.

Evan Desmond of Caribou (29:57) was third, Dylan Marerro of Woodland (31:01) fourth and Chris Rines of Houlton fifth (31:55).

For the women, Marie Beckum of Caribou was able to defend her title by completing the course in 34:50. Angela Ewings of Houlton (37:22) took second and Julie Bouchard of Caribou (37:30) was third.

Mike Plourde of Caribou was the only walker. He came in at 44:07.

Age division winners were: 15-and-under female, Teagan Ewings (39:39); 15-and-under male, George J. Ferland of Stockholm (38:35); 15-18 male, Desmond, 19-29 male, Rines; 30-39 female, Bouchard; 30-39 male; Gorneault, 40-49 female; A. Ewings; 40-49 male; Thomas Beckum of Caribou (32:21); 50-59 male; Carl Soderberg of Caribou (37:00) and 60-69 male, Ed Malone of Stockholm (40:16).

The race was the seventh leg of the County Challenge Racing Series — an annual nine-race series sponsored by the Aroostook Musterds which kicked off in February. The next races are Caribou Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay on Sept. 17 and the Caribou Turkey Trot on Nov. 25.
