115 Years Ago – Sept. 2,  1902

Turn on the lights Supt. E.E. Haynes of the Caribou Electric LIght and Power company has been putting new poles all around Caribou.  The Water works has put up extensions along Washington Street and several more streets will be wired for electric lights the first of this month.

Shiny new The Caribou Fire Department has recently been fitted out with new rubber coats.

100 Years Ago – Sept. 6, 1917

Booming Chas T. Bishop is building a new house on Page Avenue.  Also, the third story is in progress of erection on the new white concrete block of M. E. O’Regan on the corner of Washburn and Main Streets.  This block follows the same style of architecture and material as the Hackett block which it joins.  The two buildings fill the space from Sweden to Vaughan Streets to Main and together make a very imposing structure.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 2, 1942

Tons of junk — Caribou collected nearly 600 tons of junk salvage metal during the “Junk Rally Day” hosted last Thursday. Of the 600 ton total, the Caribou Lions Club committee reported that 310 tons of scrap will be used for the community swimming pool project. The committee estimates that close to $2,000 will be realized from its sale.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 6, 1967

Apartment fire — A discarded cigaret is likely the cause of a fire in an unoccupied two story apartment house on the Madawaska Road which caused an estimated $600 loss Monday afternoon.  Heavy smoke seeping out through windows, especially in the basement section of the building, a former schoolhouse, hampered firemen in their efforts to determine the exact location of the smouldering fire.  The apartment has not been occupied by any tenants for about two years.

Polls open Polls will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday  at the Teague Park gymnasium for the expenditure of funds amounting to $27,253 involved in eight referendum questions pertaining to the state elections.  Polls will close at 8:00 in the evening.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 2, 1992

Visiting County Ten British potato growers and potato machinery manufacturers on a trade mission stopped at BMW Manufacturing Inc. and Fred Sullivan & Sons Inc. in Caribou Monday as part of a three-day County tour.  The potato-oriented mission is the combination of growing links that have been established over the last few years between Aroostook County and the UK, particularly with the Grampian region of Scotland.  The mission was organized by the British AEA in association with the British Department of Trade and Industry.

Back to school Caribou elementary schools will open on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with a full session day, according to superintendent Irvin Belanger.  Students will commence at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:45 p.m.
