102 Years Ago – September 16, 1915
New veterinary surgeon — Archibald D. Howden, veterinary surgeon, a brother of Dr. A. D. Howden, who had been in town for some time engaged in this business, had relocated here, and opened an office in the house on Main Street, previously occupied by S. L. Black, and south of the store of R. J. Smith and Co.
New warehouse — Mr. Wm. Dionne, the architect and builder, started for Cape Jellison with a crew of men, having the contract to build a warehouse there for the American Potato Corporation.
75 Years Ago – September 10, 1942
Agency wins trophy — The local Railway Express Agency won the Air Express Quota Trophy for the North Shore Maine Division for the month of June and July. The division comprised all the major express offices this side of Boston.
Glasses for children — The regular weekly session of the Lions Club was held at the Northeastland Hotel. King Lion J. Walter Tapley presiding. The report of the Barbecue Committee termed the recently held barbecue a financial success. Money derived from this source to be used during the school year to buy glasses for under-privileged children. The Rubinoff-Violin Concert Committee also made a report.Col. Meserve of the Air Field was a guest of the club.
50 Years Ago – September 13, 1967
Thirty-one years — Frank L. Hayes, proprietor of Hayes Super SErvice in Presque Isle, received an engraved plaque commemorating his 31 years as an American Motors-Rambler dealer from Alan F. Bethell, automotive sales manager. Hayes was specially honored during a dealer preview of the company’s 1968 models in Boston. Similar citations were presented to 161 American Motors dealers throughout the country who have completed 25 years of more of service.
Training conference — Otis C. Wright, president of Aroostook County Farm Credit Service, representing the Federal Land Bank and Production Credit Associations, announced that General managers Waldo Hardison, Earl Leavitt, J. Paul Ouellette, and Winston White attended a training conference for Farm Credit employees at Ellenville, New York. Farm Credit Personnel from New England, New York and New Jersey attended the session too.
25 Years Ago – September 9, 1992
Wildcat girls post a win — The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats pushed their way into the win column with the 1-0 shutout over the Bangor Lady Rams at the SAD1 Athletic Complex. Senior Sandy St. Pierre scored the only goal of the game at the 35:30 mark of the second half of a penalty kick.
Library grant — The library at the University of Maine at Presque Isle received a $500 grant from the Quebec delegation office in Boston to help the library purchase books pertaining to the province of Quebec. Dr. Guy Gallagher, professor of French and director of international studies, presented the grant to Anna Mcgrath.
