Caribou hosts a cross country meet under the lights and the Houlton football team goes for its third consecutive win to begin the season to highlight varsity sports action in the region Friday, Sept. 15.
The Viking girls and boys teams are hoping to continue their early-season success as both have won their first two meets (at Ellsworth on Sept. 2 and at Presque Isle Sept. 9). Runners from Houlton, GHCA, Wisdom, Madawaska, MSSM, Fort Kent, Katahdin, Hodgdon, Presque Isle also will converge at Caribou High School for the 7 p.m. meet.
Mattanawcook Academy makes the trip north to take on Houlton on the gridiron, also at 7 p.m. The Shires enter with a 2-0 record, with victories over Stearns and Orono to begin the campaign.
In soccer today, East Grand hosts the Shead (Eastport) girls at 3 p.m. and Hodgdon hosts the Washburn girls and boys at 4 p.m. The Carlisle golf team travels to Old Town for a three-team match that will include Hermon.
On Saturday, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill plays soccer at Houlton in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Caribou travels to take on Mount Desert Island, with the girls game at 1 p.m. and the boys following at 3 p.m. The Shead boys take on East Grand in Danforth at 1 p.m.
In golf, Carlisle will compete in the John Bapst Invitational at Penobscot Valley Country Club beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Results from Thursday’s soccer and golf matches are as follows:
MSSM boys 3, Wisdom 2 — The Penguins picked up their first varsity win as an independent team in dramatic fashion. Tobyn Blatt’s third goal of the match came with just 13 seconds to play as MSSM battled back from a 2-0 deficit to top Wisdom in St. Agatha.
Blatt scored his first goal 7:20 into the second half, while his goal with 8:52 remaining tied the score. Dustin Barriere and Jared Thibodeau scored first-half goals for the Pioneers, who fell to 3-6.
Myles Benica saved 13 of 15 shots for MSSM and Trevor Couture saved 20 of 23 for Wisdom.
Fort Fairfield boys 8, Easton 1 — At Easton, Isaac Cyr had a hat trick, while Wyatt Keegan, Dawson Watson, Alex Sprague, Colin Goshorn and Jesse Helstrom had the other goals as the Tigers won their sixth consecutive game.
Jared Harvey recorded four assists and Malcolm Langner made six saves in goal for the 7-2 Tigers.
Collin Sotomayor scored for the Bears, now 5-4-1. Kody Carter registered nine saves on the afternoon.
Wisdom girls 8, MSSM 4 — Breanna Lavoie’s four goals led the Pioneers to their seventh win of the season against just two losses.
Bailey Bellefleur, Sydney Dumond, Raya Ringuette and Dorothy Harris all netted goals for Wisdom.
Lily Tedford and B.E. Maddy had two goals apiece for 1-1 MSSM.
Easton girls 6, Fort Fairfield 4 — The Bears completed their sweep of the season series against the Tigers with the victory at Easton behind a huge offensive performance by Isabelle Morin. The senior striker scored five goals, with Emma Lamoreau, Savannah Guess, Lydia Ferris and Summer Guess contributing assists on four of them.
Delia Bonner added the other goal, off a Morin assist, for the 2-6-2 Bears.
Kennedy Bencivenga and Kourtney West tallied a pair of goals each for Fort Fairfield (0-8-1).
Hodgdon golf 6, Ashland 5 — At Portage Hills Country Club Hodgdon defeated Ashland in match play. Andrew Tuttle of the Hawks was the medalist with a round of 50 as Hodgdon edged the Hornets in the final tune-up before Monday’s Aroostook League championships in Mars Hill.
Tristan Pelletier shot a 61 to lead Ashland.
