Golf teams competing for league title, state tourney bids

The Aroostook League championship golf match is being held Monday at Mars Hill Country Club.

Southern Aroostook, Hodgdon, Ashland and the host Central Aroostook Panthers will be trying to qualify for the Class C state team championships at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro Oct. 7. The top two teams will advance.

At the same time, individuals on all four squads are competing for the right to make the Class C state individual championships, set for Oct. 14, also at Natanis. At Monday’s match, boys who shoot 90 or better and girls who shoot 110 or better will move on.

The 18-hole tournament began at 8 a.m.

Carlisle and Calais take on Houlton in regular season golf play at 3:30 p.m at Houlton Community Golf Course, weather permitting.

The undefeated Washington Academy boys’ soccer team makes the trip north to Caribou Monday to take on the Vikings this afternoon at 4 p.m. Southern Aroostook boys and girls travel to Hodgdon for 3:30 p.m. games. Houlton boys travel to Mattanawcook Academy for a 4 p.m. game; and Katahdin boys and girls make the long trek north to take on Madawaska at 4 p.m.  (boys) and 6 p.m. (girls).

Summaries of soccer matches played Friday and Saturday are as follows:

Caribou girls 5, Mount Desert Island 0 — The Viking girls soccer team improved to 6-0 by shutting out Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor Saturday afternoon.

Searra Herbert scored four goals to increase her total for the season to 14. Gabrielle Marquis netted the other Viking goal and also recorded an assist. Jaelynn Doody needed to save just two of the four shots she faced in notching the shutout in goal.

Cassia Barnes collected 13 saves on 18 shots for MDI (2-2-1).

Caribou boys 1, MDI 0 — Austin Findlen scored early in the second half for the lone goal of the match, leading the visiting Vikings to the victory over the Trojans Saturday in Bar Harbor.

The Vikings improved to 3-2 and MDI remained winless at 0-5.

Hodgdon girls 2, Washburn 1 — Sidney Crane’s second goal of the match, scored in the second half, was the difference as the Hawks (2-2-1) defeated the Beavers (4-4-2) Friday in Hodgdon.

Sam Churchill tallied the Beavers’ goal in the first half. Autumn Ganzel had 15 saves on 16 shots for the Hawks, while Carly Bragg notched 16 saves on 18 shots for Washburn.

Hodgdon boys 2, Washburn 0 — Wyatt Foster scored twice Friday as the Hawks kept the Beavers winless. Michael Sanders saved all six shots he faced for the shutout in goal. Hodgdon’s record improved to 3-2.

Josh Jackson and Beckham Vaughn combined for 10 saves on 19 shots for Washburn (0-10).

George Stevens Academy boys 2, Houlton 1 — At Houlton Saturday, the Shires suffered their first loss of the season. Taylor Schildroth had both goals for GSA one assisted by Austin Snow in the first half off of a throw in and one in the second half from Chris Bennett.

Pat Howe scored off of a direct kick for Houlton’s only goal.

GSA out shot Houlton 13-6. AJ Henderson and Drew Foley combined for seven saves for the Shires. Alec Witham had five saves for GSA.

Houlton is now 2-1-1 on the season, while GSA improves to 4-0-2.

Houlton girls 3, GSA 0 — At home Saturday, the host-Shires improved to 5-0 on the season with a shutout victory over George Stevens Academy. Kolleen Bouchard had two goals to pace Houlton. Mia Hanning added a goal and assist.

Tessa Solomon and Kennedy Buzzeo split time in goal and combined for one save on three shots. Bess McArthur stopped eight of 23 shots for 2-3-1 George Stevens.

Golf matches

Houlton 164, John Bapst 190 — At the Pine Hill Golf Course (Par 36) in Brewer Friday, Houlton improved to 11-1 on the year as the Shires easily bested John Bapst. Drew Marino was medalist on the day as he shot a two-under par 34.

Other scorers for Houlton were Wyatt Harvey, 40; Nick Brewer, 45; Isaac Vega, 45; Carson Grant, 45; Devin Ivey, 49; Sydney Lorom, 60; and Rhetta Vega, 64.

For John Bapst, Jerry Hung and Cannon Breen  both shot a 47, followed by Nate Mushlit, 48; Sam Yoo, 48; David Fernandez, 55; Crystal Bell, 54; Cameron Ashe, 54; and Dominique Needham, 54.

Old Town golf 171, Hermon 178, Carlisle 190 — The Carlisle golf team made the trip to Hidden Meadows Golf Course in Old Town and placed third in the three-team match Friday afternoon.

Carlisle is now 7-7 on the season. Seth Roy and Libby Boone led the team by shooting identical 44s. Gabe Rand carded a 50.

Old Town is now 13-0 as Coyote golfer Chris Kauppila shot a 36 for medalist honors.

The Vikings also competed in the John Bapst Invitational Saturday at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono and took seventh place out of nine teams with a score of 389. Gabe Rand shot a 93 for his 18-hole round, while Noah Rosado and Seth Roy each shot 97. Mattanawcook won the match with a score of 329.
