The survival of America
To the editor:
The American system of government with its checks and balances, its constitutional restrictions of power is exceedingly complicated. The men who wrote the American Constitution believed that every person has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
However, it appears that the people have less and less control and say about how their lives are lived and how the government carries out its duties as outlined in our constitution. Government continues to grow larger, assuming more and more power, ignoring the voice of the people. Immoral conduct and corruption in our government have eroded the effectiveness of our leaders to lead.
It’s election time again and the politicians are telling everyone change is needed and they are the ones who can bring the changes needed to bring America back to where we once were. They promise to create more jobs, lower taxes, improve our school systems, improve health care, help small businesses, get the housing market back on track, correct the wrongs of the financial world, improve consumer protection and the list goes on.
I agree we need change, get the members of the House of Representatives and Senate, who have served 20 years or more out of Washington and send them home. We have term limits on our governors and presidents, so it’s time we put term limits on members of the House and Senate.
There was a time when you could write your congressman, congresswoman, senators and other leaders in our government and shortly you would receive and answer, but now seldom do you get an answer. When you do, it’s full of excuses or it is the responsibility of another agency.
Now that we are nearing the time to go to the polls and vote, the mailboxes are full of brochures telling us why we should vote for a particular person. The telephones never stop ringing, plus the television ads we have to endure just to watch the news. Then after the election is over, it’s back to normal, the people go back to their offices in Washington and the votes are forgotten.
But more important is the changes that were promised never come; all we get are excuses. There are roadblocks they didn’t expect when they made the promises and things continue on as usual.
I believe the reason our country, as well as the rest of the world, is in the condition it is, is that man has assumed they can govern the world without the help of God. The more God is left out of the equation, the worse things will get.
The holy bible is God’s directions for mankind to have life, liberty and happiness here on earth and one day have eternal life with Him in heaven.
The Constitution of the United States of America is our forefathers’ directions on how a government should be run in order to ensure the rights of the country’s people are not violated and they have the right to life, liberty and happiness. They had a vigorous, incommunicable and all-encompassing belief in God. Faith permeated their thoughts, their words and deeds. Take God our of our lives and government and you have what we have today, a world out of control.
The nation of America was born out of faith in God and cannot survive on broken promises, lies and deceit. Neither can we survive without God in our lives and government.
