PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 will host the annual Soccer Shoot penalty kicking contest on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle athletic fields.

“The Elks Soccer Shoot contest is absolutely free of charge,” said Elks Exalted Ruler Marion Donahue. “It is open to all area youth under 14 years of age as of Aug. 1, 2017.  There are four age categories with divisions of each age group for boys and girls, namely, under age 8; ages 8 and 9; ages 10 and 11; and ages 12 and 13. Winners and runners-up in each division and age group will receive a trophy.”

Winners will be eligible to compete in the Elks District Soccer Shoot contest in Bangor on Oct. 8.

Contestants under age 10 will have three tries to kick a soccer ball through each of five different size goals, ranging from 48 inches wide down to 17 inches wide, with increasing points awarded for successful kicks through the smallest goals.

Contestants ages 10-13 will attempt 15 “penalty kicks” from a distance of 36 feet from the goal, with more points awarded to kicks in the quadrants of the goal toughest to defend, namely the corners.

The Elks will serve grilled hot dogs, drinks and chips to all contestants and their families free of charge.
