Adult Education

    The SAD 42 Mars Hill Adult Education classes begin the week of Oct. 18 and run through the week of Dec. 6. Classes being offered include Quilting on Monday and Thursday, Woodworking on Thursday, Cardio Kick Aerobics on Monday, Primitive Crafts on Monday, Knitting on Tuesday and Cake Decorating with Fondant on Tuesday. 

    All classes run from 6 – 8 or 8:30 p.m. A registration fee of $15 will be charged for each course and must be paid prior to attending the class. Citizens of SAD 42 who are 60 years of age or older will be admitted free of charge, but you are asked to register as some class sizes may be limited.

CNA course

    Are you looking for a rewarding career opportunity? The Aroostook Medical Center and SAD 42 are offering a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course that will prepare participants to work in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals and nursing homes. provide hands-on care which can include taking a patient’s blood pressure, helping with personal hygiene, assisting with feeding and much more.
    The application deadline is Nov. 1 and the course will begin on Dec. 6 at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill. Tuition is $450 and there is a $100 application fee. For more information or to obtain an application, please call Kathy Miller at SAD 42 Superintendent’s Office at 425-3771.

 
Compost class

    Northern Maine Development Commission, in conjunction with the Maine State Planning Office, is offering a free compost class in Mars Hill on Monday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m., at the Mars Hill Fire Department.
    This backyard composting class, that includes a free Earth Machine compost bin, is for anyone who is considering starting a compost pile and for those who may have started composting but are not getting the desired results. Introductory composting concepts including water, microbes, size and aeration will be discussed.
    Pre-registration is required and class space is limited to 10 people. To register for the class, contact Connie Bondeson, environmental planner, at 498-8736 or toll free 800-427-8736.

    SLEEPOVER — Mars Hill Librarian Rita Kingbury said goodbye to, from the left, Brownie Sara Stitham, Brownie Madison Crouse and Cadette Jessica Cropley. The girls learned how to finger knit from Rita during their recent sleepover at the library.

 
Aglow International

    The monthly meeting of Aglow International will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Campus Center of the University of Maine at Presque Isle from 9 – 11:30 a.m. The special speaker will be Iris J. York Pelley, who grew up in Mars Hill and attended the Full Gospel Assembly.
    Iris has taught at Zion Bible College as well as being the head of the Missions Department and Prayer Tower. For over 10 years she was the prayer pastor for Barnabas Ministries. Currently she helps direct Frontlines Missions and Ministries with her husband Richard, who is the founder and director.
    Iris is a frequent speaker at women’s groups and in various churches in New England as well as traveling nationally. Come join the group as Iris imparts the word of God. You’ll be glad you did.

Rotary Club

    The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Carl Allen of Presque Isle. He works for OSHA and teaches about hazardous materials and safety in both 10-hour and 30-hour classes for general industry, construction and Maritime industry.
    OSHA started in 1970. Prior to this, safety rules were under union rules. The mission of OSHA is to develop job safety and health standards and enforce them through worksite inspections.
    Information is available on safety, health, hazardous chemicals, injuries, training, complaints, exposure and more. The biggest issue is for employers to understand the hazardous chemicals in use at their facilities. Allen said both the employer and employee have to be responsible on the jobsite.

 
Craft fair

    There will be a craft fair at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. sponsored by St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. For more information, contact Cherry at 429-9892.

 
Benefit supper

    There will be a benefit supper and auction to help with the hospital expenses for Porter Ray Bell on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be no charge for dinner, but donations will be taken. The auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature many donated items. Please contact Katie Bell, Betsy Allen, Lovena West, Megan Cronkite or Teri St. Pierre for more information or to donate items for the auction.

 
Girl Scouts

    The week of Sept. 19 – 25 was National Turn-Off-TV Week, which members of Girl Scout Troop 1134 participated in this year. As their reward for not watching TV for three or more days, Brownies Madison Crouse and Sara Stitham and Cadette Jessica Cropley spent the night at the Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library in Mars Hill.
    The girls spent their time at the library having a library-themed scavenger hunt, playing flashlight hide and seek, and learning finger knitting from librarian Rita Kingsbury, who stayed the night with the troop along with co-leaders Amanda Crouse and Cathy Cropley.
    As September is also National Library Sign-Up Month, the sleepover ended with the younger girls signing up for their own library cards.
