MAPLETON NEWS
When Town Clerk Trudie Buck retired Aug. 27 after 36 dedicated years of working for the residents of Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill, a vacancy was left in the Town Office. That vacancy has since been filled by Castle Hill resident Theresa Denbow. On day five of her new job, Denbow was all smiles when she told me how excited she is to return to municipal work. Denbow served as deputy clerk in Lubec for four years before relocating her family to Mapleton in 2001 to help care for her aging parents. Most recently, Denbow worked as the manager of the training department of Connect North America from their opening day in December 2006 until their recent closure. She admitted that she has “watched and waited nine years for a position to open in the Town Office!” Since starting as assistant deputy clerk, she noted that, “Everyone has been wonderful. It has been an easy transition after being out (of this line of work) for so long. The girls (other employees in the office) have been very helpful. They told me, ‘You’re the trainer,’ but they have done a great job training me!”
Theresa resides in Castle Hill with Wendell, her husband of 27 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and working in her perennial garden. Theresa has even painstakingly transported some of her favorite plants from her family home in Lubec to transplant in her flower gardens at her home on the Haystack Road.
If you haven’t already, please stop by the Town Office to give a warm welcome to Theresa!

Most of you are familiar with the annual Girl Scout cookie sale that takes place in January, but did you know that Girl Scouts also participate in a fall fundraiser? This is the final week for area Girl Scouts to take orders for nuts, candy, and magazine subscriptions. Not only do the troops that participate earn money for each item sold, but the girls also have an opportunity to earn patches and incentive prizes. If a Girl Scout approaches you to place an order, please consider supporting your local troops!
The Chapman Ridge Runners will hold their first meeting of the season at the new clubhouse located at 94 Town Hall Road Saturday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. There will be a speaker from Maine Fire Protection and plans will be made for the turkey supper in November. Arlene was recognized by her pastor, the Rev. Dr. Ken Phelps, during church on her last Sunday in Mapleton. Pictures were shown on the big screen of her new home and the many amenities the community offered for their residents. Many made comments that they would like to move there with her!
Attending the lunch were: very best friends Charles and Mille Putnam, Ray, Marie and Becky Hare, Ticky Allen, Larry and Debbie Sawyer and her favorite waitresses at the Pizza House, Carla Carney and Rachel Ellis.
Arlene received a card and monetary gift from those attending. Although she is sad to leave her dear friends here, Arlene is looking forward to being closer to most of her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She’d love to hear from her friends up here; her new address is: Arlene Baker, North Campus, 143 Rodgers Road Apt. #332, Kittery, Maine 03904.
The youth at the Mapleton Methodist Church planning to attend Youth 2011 will be sponsoring a baked bean supper (with all the fixings) Saturday, Oct. 23 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Mapleton United Methodist Church. The cost will be $5 per person.
The Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society held its monthly meeting Sept. 28. The group is pleased to report that the floor leading into the bathrooms has been completed. The door leading into the hallway has also been repaired and painted and there is now heat in the bathrooms. Members feel these are all great improvements!
The Hall saw its share of functions and celebrations over the summer. The annual Richardson reunion was held in June and an 80th birthday party was held in August for Vella Condon. Both celebrations were great successes. The Hall is available for rent from May to November.
The public is reminded to watch for the annual candy bar sale that will be held this winter to raise money for further improvements and operating expenses.
New members are always needed to help keep the hall functioning. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday from February through November. Dues are only $10 per year or $100 for a lifetime membership.
If any teacher would like to bring their class to the Museum for a field trip, they are encouraged to call President Diane Pratt at 764-6085 or Secretary Myrna Gardner at 764-0290 to make arrangements.
The Haystack Historical Society is always looking for new members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please consider attending their next meeting Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Museum.
The United Methodist Church will be hosting its weekly luncheon Friday, Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m. There is no charge for the luncheon, but donations are accepted. All are welcome to attend.
