’Cat golfers 5th in state

VASSALBORO — Cold, blustery conditions greeted the Presque Isle golf team Saturday as the Wildcats competed for the state Class B team championship at Natanis Golf Course.
The Wildcats hoped to finish among the top five squads in their region and did precisely that, placing fifth out of 35 Class B teams. Falmouth won the state title shooting 315, followed by York, 327; Yarmouth, 341; Lincoln Academy, 346 and the Wildcats. Seven other schools competed.
“Our goal going in was to place in the top 5, so I couldn’t be happier,” Presque Isle coach James York said. “Even though we did stuggle somewhat, I think they handled it fairly well. The Tomahawk Course is challenging on its own, and the wind was blowing 15-20 mph at times, and the fairways were quite soggy from all the rain.”
Senior Travis Dyer was the low scorer on the day for the Wildcats, shooting an 84. Junior Evan Waddell was next with an 85. Sophomore Adam Flynn, appearing at his first state championship, shot a 92 while senior Alex Tuttle fired a 95.
“In all, there are 35 teams in Class B, so placing fifth I think is a great achievement, and we won our conference, so all in all, we had a very successful season,” York said. “Had we had a better day, we could have been in the top 3, but that’s the nature of golf. It’s very unpredictable.”
The Wildcats will send four golfers — Waddell, Dyer, Jordan Hallett and Flynn — to the individual championships this coming Saturday at Natanis.
“I will greatly miss my three seniors, Travis, Alex, and Jordan, who have been the anchors of the team for the past three years, and I want to thank them for always being there for me and the team,” coach York said. “I wish them the best of everything. With Evan, and Adam, these five have performed beyond my expectations this season, and have done so with dignity and pride. They should be very proud for how they have represented Presque Isle. I look forward to another strong team next season.
Ashland, FF compete in Class C
Also on Saturday, the Ashland and Fort Fairfield golf teams competed in the state Class C golf championship. Fort Fairfield finished sixth, while Ashland was 10th. Houlton won the Class C crown for the second straight season. Fort Fairfield totaled 395 strokes and Ashland 433.
Scoring for Fort Fairfield were: Billy Weissman, 103; Landon Towle, 106; Noah Bernanrd, 95; and Tyler Churchill, 91.
Scoring for Ashland were: Dylan Cormier-Cyr, 106; Jordan Beaulier, 105; Royce MacDonald, 113; and Amos Ward, 109.
