A Chatham memorial service will be held on Sat., Oct. 30, followed immediately by a family burial at People’s Cemetery and a 3:30 p.m. reception. WOLFEBORO, NH – Mary Elizabeth (Hoyt) Wills, formerly of Chatham, MA, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME, on September 24. Born in Fort Fairfield, Feb. 20, 1930, Mary was the fourth of five children born to James Victor Hoyt and Idella Dora (Morrell) Hoyt, and raised in Easton.
Mary graduated from Easton High School in 1947. When not working on the family farm, Mary enjoyed playing basketball and softball, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, was active in the Girl Scouts (attending camp and climbing Mt. Katahdin with treks across the Knife’s Edge), and was a spotter during WWII counting war planes from a Spotting Tower in Easton. After earning a degree from Presque Isle Teaching College, a Bachelor’s Degree from University of Maine Orono, and a year of practice teaching at Maine Central Prep in Pittsfield, Mary moved to Chatham in 1952 to teach. In 1954, she married Richard Wills, of Winchester, MA, and Chatham. While raising their four sons, Mary was a Cub Scout Den Mother, (receiving the prestigious Silver Beaver & Fawn awards), an active member of the So. Chatham Community Church, a founding partner of the So. Chatham Community Church Nursery School, and a Trustee of the Eldridge Public Library. Mary and Richard retired to their Wolfeboro home in 1986.
Mary was pre-deceased by her parents and brothers, C. Thomas Hoyt, Phillip A. Hoyt and Robert E. Hoyt.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Wills; brother, James V. Hoyt, Jr.; sons and their wives, Gary Wills & Janet Lockyer, Dean & Beth Wills, Glen & Darlene Wills, and Timothy & Heidi Wills; beloved grandchildren, Adam Wills, Hunter Lockyer-Wills, Tanner Wills, Jazz Lockyer-Wills, and Erik Wills; and many nieces and nephews.
A Wolfeboro memorial service will be held on Sat., Oct. 23, at the First Baptist Church of Wolfeboro at 1:30 p.m. A Chatham memorial service will be held on Sat., Oct. 30, at the South Chatham Community Church at 1:30 p.m., followed immediately by a family burial at People’s Cemetery, and a 3:30 p.m. reception at the South Chatham Hall.
