Congress should adopt president’s tax reform plan

To the editor:

The top priority for Congress this fall should be to answer President Trump’s call for tax reform. Tax reform will help middle-income families in three ways.

First, tax reform will lead to more and better jobs. By cutting the business tax rate and leveling the playing field for American companies, tax reform will make it more attractive for American businesses to invest in the U.S. economy and create jobs here in Maine.

Second, the president’s plan to simplify the tax code will save families across the nation hours of frustration and billions of dollars in compliance costs. Under the president’s plan, an estimated 95 percent of families would be able to do their taxes on a single page without having to keep records and paperwork to track deductions and other financial data.

Third, tax reform will provide real relief to middle-income families. Under the president’s plan, the first $24,000 of income earned by a married couple would be completely tax-free. On top of that, families with children will get additional tax benefits under the president’s proposal.

Right now the tax code doesn’t work for average Americans — it only benefits narrow special interest groups and those with a lot of power and money. It’s time Congress acted on behalf of the people who voted them into office by supporting the president’s tax reform agenda.
