Owl men’s soccer team splits home matches

UMPI’s fall athletic teams had a busy weekend, which included home soccer matches Friday for the men and Saturday for both the women and men. The volleyball team was on the road for three more matches. Summaries of those contest are as follows: 

Owl men split home matches

The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s soccer team scored a season-high three goals Friday in a 3-1 victory over UM-Machias, then were shut out by UM-Farmington Saturday, 3-0.

Both matches were held at Park Family Field on the UMPI campus.

In the win, Brandon Danforth opened the scoring with a goal eight minutes into the match and then assisted on Ansumana Morrow’s goal in the 34th minute. UMPI was outshot 6-2 over the final 45 minutes and the visiting Clippers made it 2-1 on a Michael Grimanis goal, but UMPI’s Cody Blair scored off a Chris Udobe assist in the 82nd minute to secure the win. Matt Manter made five saves in goal for the Owls.

The following afternoon, UMF held an 18-4 shot advantage en route to a victory. Ethan Stufoso, Nick Marshall and William Heimlich tallied goals for the Beavers.

The Owls now take a 2-5 record into road matches Saturday, Sept. 30, against Becker College and Sunday, Oct. 1, against Fisher College.

UMPI women shut out twice

The Owl women’s soccer team was blanked by UM-Farmington at home Saturday, 6-0, before falling to Thomas College in Waterville Sunday, 2-0.

The Beavers’ McKenna Brodeur recorded a first-half hat trick and also posted her fourth goal in the second half as UMF cruised to the win in Presque Isle. Allie Lopez made eight saves in the first half for the Owls.

After a scoreless first half, Taznae Fubler assisted on Jada Samuels’ goal and then Fubler scored herself, both coming within 90 seconds of each other, in Thomas’s 2-0 triumph.

UMPI holds a 1-3 record entering a match against Bryant and Stratton in Buffalo, New York, Sunday.

Volleyball team drops 3 matches

The UMPI volleyball team is now 4-9 after losing last Wednesday to Husson University in Bangor and then dropping matches to both Eastern Connecticut State and Plymouth State in Plymouth, N.H., Saturday.

The Owls were able to win a game against Husson, 25-17, but lost the others by scores of 25-12, 25-23 and 25-17. Taylor Johnson recorded 12 kills and seven digs in the match for UMPI, while Miranda Washinawatok had nine kills and 20 digs and Hannah Williams and Maddie Thweatt 16 digs each.

UMPI loss both matches Saturday by 3 games to none. The team next plays at UM-Machias Wednesday, Sept. 27.
