MACOMB, IL – Lt. Col. (Retired) Mitchell J. Corey, 88, of Macomb, Illinois, passed away at 9:23 a.m. Sunday, September 10, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Caribou, on April 13, 1929 to Michael and Effie (Sowma) Corey.
He is survived by his wife, Sue (Stone-Rexroat) Corey, of Macomb, Illinois; two daughters, Michele Guerrette and her companion Rich Whicker of Sanford, Caron Sabo and her husband Mike of Saco, three granddaughters, Angie, Kristin, and Erica; one grandson, Jonathan; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Cecile Chiaverini and her husband Jack of San Anselmo, California; two step-daughters, Kim Rexroat-Smith and her husband Scott of Macomb, Illinois, Darcy Rexroat-Holmer and her husband Christian of Mexico City, Mexico; three step-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dot Cote and Sally Hackett; first wife, Camilla (Michaud) Corey.
He graduated from the Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, in 1946, and Ricker College in Houlton, in 1951. He entered the Army in 1952 and saw service in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. His stateside services included tours of duty in Oklahoma, Colorado, North Carolina, California, New York, and Washington D.C. He also attended the US Army Command & General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His final service was as a Professor of Military Science at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. His military decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oakleaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Honor Medal, and the Order of St. Barbara.
He was a past member of the Lockport, New York Council; Knights of Columbus; Honorary Member of Sigma Alpha Sigma; Niagara University of Niagara Falls, New York; Kiwanis Club of Macomb, Illinois; and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Macomb, Illinois.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors was held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017, at Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, in Augusta.
