The top two teams in the Class D North boys’ and the Class C North girls’ soccer standings will meet up against each other in matches to be played Friday and Saturday.
No. 1 Central Aroostook (9-0) will put its undefeated record on the line Friday when second-ranked Fort Fairfield (8-3) pays a visit to Mars Hill for a 7 p.m. start. The Panthers won the first meeting in Fort Fairfield, 1-0, played way back on Aug. 17.
On Saturday at noon, the Houlton girls, at 9-0 and in first place, travel to Orono for a battle against the No. 2 Red Riots (7-1). When the two teams met Sept. 9 in Houlton, the Shires came through with a 3-2 victory.
The only other match on Friday involving teams from the region has the Fort Fairfield girls taking on Central Aroostook in Mars Hill at 5 p.m.
Other soccer matches on Saturday include Houlton boys at Orono at 2 p.m., Foxcroft Academy girls and boys at Presque Isle (1 and 3 p.m.), Caribou girls and boys at Hermon (1 and 3 p.m.) and Ashland at Southern Aroostook girls and boys (both with 2 p.m. starts).
Several cross country teams make the trip to Belfast for the Festival of Champions, a huge meet which features teams from throughout the state and even a few from out of state. Caribou, Greater Houlton Christian Academy, Houlton, Presque Isle and Washburn are all traveling south for the competition, which begins at 11 a.m.
The Houlton football team hosts Old Town at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Thursday soccer summaries
Ashland girls 4, Fort Kent 1 — Shelby Stolze, Jamie Poulin and Willow Hall all scored second-half goals as the Hornets remained undefeated with the 4-1 victory over visiting Class C Fort Kent.
Amanda Thibeault gave the Warriors the early lead, off a Cassidy Lovley assist, before Amber Chasse netted a goal off a rebound on a Morgan Doughty free kick to tie the match heading into halftime.
Goalkeeper Megan Cote and the Hornet defense kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in the second half. Ashland is now 9-0 and atop the Class D North standings and Fort Kent’s record fell to 5-4.
Fort Kent boys 3, Ashland 1 — At Ashland, Caleb Delisle, Sam Johnson and Bennet Theriault scored a goal apiece for Fort Kent in the victory.
Niko Naranja and Eden Paradis had assists and goalkeeper Reece Pelletier saved two of three shots for the Warriors, the first place team in Class C North with a 7-1-1 record. Steven Bellanceau made 10 saves on 16 shots in goal for Ashland, which fell to 3-5-1 with the loss.
Caribou girls 3, Foxcroft Academy 1 — At Dover-Foxcroft, Gabrielle Marquis and Ashley Matlock tallied second-half goals to pace Caribou to the win. Matlock added a first-half goal for the 8-0 Vikings, the first place team in Class B North.
Searra Herbert and Edie Shea provided assists on two of Caribou’s goals. Goalkeepers Jaelyn Doody and Sage Dubay combined to make eight saves on 13 shots.
Makenzie Harmon scored a first-half goal off an Ainsley Ade assist for Foxcroft (2-4-1). Kiara Prescott, the Ponies’ goalkeeper, collected 28 saves on 34 shots.
Southern Aroostook girls 4, East Grand 1 — The Warriors are now 5-2 on the season following the win in Danforth. The Vikings are still winless at 0-7-1. Scoring details and goalkeeping statistics were not reported.
East Grand boys 6, Southern Aroostook 1 — The Vikings moved to 3-6 and the Warriors are still without a win at 0-7 following the match in Danforth. Scoring details and goalkeeping statistics were not reported.
Lee Academy boys 1, Houlton 0 — The Pandas garnered the shutout win in the Class C battle played at Houlton. The Shires are now 4-4-1 and Lee evened its record at 4-4. Scoring details and goalkeeping statistics were not reported.
