CARIBOU, Maine — Local police are warning area residents of a rash of car burglaries in the area in the last week.
A total of eight burglaries have been reported since Sept. 23, according to Laura Adams, administrative assistant for the Caribou Police Department, but the department believes there may be more, as residents may not have noticed or reported others yet.
Adams said the one that have been reported occurred “in the north section of town, on streets on both sides of Main Street.”
Police currently have a couple suspects, she said, and have recovered several stolen items and evidence, which has been sent to a crime lab for examination.
Officers are patrolling in areas where the complaints were made, in addition to investigating the incidents that already have occurred.
The thefts are “definitely happening while people are sleeping,” said Adams, stressing that Caribou residents need to lock their doors and secure their things at night.
“It’s very rare that someone will actually break a window,” Adams said. “They will just take out of the vehicles that are unlocked.”
In a notice posted on the department’s Facebook page on Sept. 28, police urge residents who see something unusual or notice anyone suspicious walking through the neighborhood at an odd hour to call the station at 493-3301.
