It’s a busy weekend for a few golf and cross country teams and many soccer squads as the championship portion of the schedule is here for some or is approaching soon for others.
The Houlton and Central Aroostook golf teams will be in Vassalboro for the Class C state team championships at Natanis Golf Course Saturday. Houlton qualified at the Penobscot Valley Conference event held Sept. 28 at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln and Central Aroostook did so at the Aroostook League championships held in Mars Hill Sept. 18.

In cross country, Presque Isle will be at Hermon Friday for the Pendale Invitational, while Caribou is in action Saturday for the Red Riot Race in Orono.
On the soccer field, Friday’s matches include Katahdin against MSSM in Limestone, with the boys playing first at 4 p.m. and the girls going next at 6 p.m. Madawaska takes on Central Aroostook in Mars Hill, the girls first at 5 p.m. and the boys following at 7 p.m. Shead plays at Hodgdon with both matches beginning at 3:30 p.m. and Southern Aroostook makes the long trip north to Van Buren. The girls play at 4 p.m. and the boys at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s soccer matchups include Ellsworth at Caribou at 2 p.m. (girls) and 4 p.m. (boys). Presque Isle is on the road to take on Old Town. The girls play at 11 a.m. and the boys at 2:30. Houlton travels to take on Lee. The girls play at noon and the boys at 2 p.m.
Summaries of soccer matches involving teams in the region that were played Oct. 4 and 5 are as follows:
Houlton girls 5, Fort Kent 1 — The Shires prevailed and kept their undefeated season alive at home against the Warriors Thursday in the battle between the Aroostook County Class C schools.
The Shires’ Kolleen Bouchard scored three goals and had an assist and Mia Hanning added two goals in the win. Sierra Hoops contributed two assists and Jamie Brown had one. Tessa Solomon had four saves on seven shots for Houlton.
Alisha Guimond scored Fort Kent’s lone goal and Lindsay Ouellette collected six saves on 15 shots.
The Shires are 11-0 and atop the Class C North standings. Fort Kent, at 6-5, is currently in eighth place.
Fort Kent boys 2, Houlton 0 — The Warriors parlayed second-half goals by Niko Naranja and Noah Martin into their ninth win of the season against one loss and one tie.
Fort Kent secured its hold on the No. 1 position in the Class C North standings with Thursday’s victory in Houlton. The Shires fell to 4-6-1 with the loss and they are in eight place.
MSSM boys 5, Van Buren 1 — Tobyn Blatt accounted for all five of his team’s goals, including a second-half hat trick, as the MSSM Penguins beat the visiting Van Buren Crusaders, 5-1, on Wednesday.
Myles Benica came up with seven saves on eight shots for 3-2 MSSM, who were ranked eighth in the Class D North table after the win.

Decon Thiverage scored in the first half off an Emmanuel Deschaine assist for 4-7 Van Buren. Crusader Colby Lapointe posted nine saves on 14 shots.
Van Buren girls 4, MSSM 1 — Goals by Emillia Nicknair, Tiffany Morrow, Leah Gendreau and Abby Ayotte on Wednesday keyed Van Buren’s win over MSSM in Limestone.
MSSM’s Madelyn Battock-Emerson scored her team’s only goal of the match.
The Crusaders improved to 2-8-1 and the Penguins are 2-3.
Southern Aroostook boys 3, East Grand 2 — At Dyer Brook Wednesday, Brett Williams scored on an assist from Gavin Vining with 12 minutes left in the second half to break the tie and give the Warriors their first win of the season.
Logan Swallow scored twice in the first half for 1-9 Southern Aroostook, while Hunter Walker and Williams provided an assist each. Steven Rackliffe made 13 saves on 21 shots.
Noah Sixberry and Thomas Gilman each notched a goal and an assist for 3-7 East Grand of Danforth. Brady McEwen made eight saves on 13 shots.
Southern Aroostook girls 9, East Grand 1 — Aliyah Morales and Kylie Vining each recorded a hat trick and an assist to propel Southern Aroostook past East Grand of Danforth Wednesday in Dyer Brook.
Emma Nadeau, Kassidy Mathers and Jordyn Legassey netted a goal apiece for the 9-2 Warriors. Makaelyn Porter, Kacy Daggett and Legassey chipped in with assists. Sydney Brewer made four saves on seven shots.
Jordan Cowger made seven saves on 20 shots for 1-8-1 East Grand.
