The top girls’ team in Class C takes on one of the top squads in Class D to highlight Columbus Day soccer action.
Houlton, at 12-0, makes the trip north to play Madawaska (8-2), ranked fourth in Class D, in a 6 p.m. start. The game follows the boys’ contest between the Shires (5-6-1) and Owls (6-4), which starts at 4 p.m.
The only other matches involve Aroostook County’s lone Class B schools. Hermon is in town to take on Presque Isle, while Caribou heads down to Newport to play a new opponent, the Nokomis Warriors. Both doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m. with the girls playing first.
The Caribou girls, tops in their division with a 10-0 mark, play a Nokomis team which stands at 1-9-1. The Viking boys, now 4-6 and in 11th place after Saturday’s win over Ellsworth, plays a Warrior team which has yet to win in 11 tries.
The PI girls are now 8-2 and square off against Hermon, which is 7-2-1. The Hawks knocked off the Wildcats in last year’s semifinal round. The boys’ contest features the 7-2-1 Wildcats against the 5-4-1 Hawks. Both PI squads are currently in fifth place in Class B North.
Friday and Saturday soccer summaries
MSSM boys 4, Katahdin 1 — Will Perkins scored with 14 minutes to play in the first half, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending MSSM to the victory over the Cougars Friday in Limestone.
Tobyn Blatt scored the Penguins’ first goal before William Schilkowski tied it for Katahdin. Second-half goals by MSSM’s Rudy Ye and Harrison Walters capped the scoring.
Walters, Blatt and Ryan Berry recorded assists for the 4-2 Penguins. Myles Benica saved eight of nine shots in goal for the winners.
Tanner Lane and Bradley Hotham combined for 21 saves on 25 shots for the 2-7-1 Cougars.
Katahdin girls 2, MSSM 0 — Erin Lake tallied off an Emily Byers assist and Kate Anderson connected on a penalty kick as the Cougars moved to 4-5-1 Friday with the victory at Limestone. The Penguins’ record is now 2-4.
Madawaska girls 5, Central Aroostook 2 — Breanne Bradbury scored twice for the Panthers, but Hannah Nadeau had four for the Owls in Friday’s match at Mars Hill. Caitlyn Harris handled the goalkeeping chores for CA, which fell to 7-4.
Central Aroostook boys 4, Madawaska 2 — The Panthers showed off their offensive balance as Hayden Kingsbury, Taylor Campbell, Caleb Harris and Hunter Wardwell all scored in the victory at Mars Hill Friday.
Lance Lavoie scored both goals for the Owls. Central Aroostook is now 10-1 and in second place in Class D North. Brayden Bradbury recorded the victory in goal.
Caribou girls 6, Ellsworth 0 — The Vikings prevailed again as Hope Shea, Searra Herbert and Joycelyn Hartin all scored a pair of goals and goalkeepers Jaelynn Doody and Sage Dubay recorded the shutout.
For Herbert, it was her team-leading 20th and 21st goals on the season.
Gabrielle Marquis recorded two assists and Ashley Matlock, Amber Moir and Shea each had one for the host Vikings.
The Eagles’ Kylie Robidoux made six saves on 16 shots for her team, now 2-9-1.
Caribou boys 2, Ellsworth 1 — Scott Hunter has been coaching the Vikings since 2011 and Saturday was the first time his team had ever beaten Ellsworth.
Thanks to a first-half goal by Bailey Griffeth and a second-half penalty kick by Alex Ezzy, Caribou took a 2-0 lead en route to the win at Caribou High School.
The Vikings surrendered a goal by Colin LaCasse with 26 minutes to play but the Eagles (5-6-1) got no closer.
Cullin Caverhill had an assist for the winners and Noah Hixon saved 10 of 14 shots.
Presque Isle girls 3, Old Town 1 — Madison Michaud scored twice, her 22nd and 23rd goals of the season, and Paige McHatten had another as the Wildcats won their fifth consecutive match Saturday on the Coyotes’ home field.
Presque Isle boys 3, Old Town 0 — Kyler Caron put in two goals and Griffin Guerrette had another as the Wildcats prevailed on the road Saturday.
Goalkeeper Jason Dumais posted his fourth shutout, the third in the squad’s last four matches. Jonah Hudson and Adam Paterson provided assists for Presque Isle.
Hodgdon boys 2, Shead 0 — At Hodgdon Friday, Wyatt Foster scored on a header from Dylan Oliver’s corner kick to give Hodgdon the win. Oliver also scored a goal when Josh Foster’s kick from goal went untouched. Foster finished with one save on three shots. Hodgdon improves to 8-2-2 on the season.
CJ Francis made eight saves on 20 shots for Shead of Eastport (5-5-1).
Hodgdon girls 3, Shead 2 — At Hodgdon Friday, Emma Drew scored on an assist from Sabra Scott with 27 seconds left in the game to give the Hawks the win over the Tigers.
Hodgdon (6-5-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Scott with 28:37 left in the first half. Scott also scored a second-half goal to tie it with 12:08 to play in the contest. Autumn Ganzel made 5 saves on 7 shots.
For Shead of Eastport (4-6-1), Cassidy Wilder scored a goal with 34:49 left to tie the game at 1-1. Jacquelyn Cook scored at the 22:29 mark in the second half to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Maddie Greenlaw made 17 stops and faced 20 shots.
Van Buren boys 2, Southern Aroostook 1 — At Van Buren Friday, Luke Perreault and Decon Thiverage scored first-half goals as the Crusaders improved to 4-7 on the season. Brett Williamson scored the lone goal for Southern Aroostook (1-10).
Southern Aroostook girls 3, Van Buren 0 — At Van Buren Friday, SA improved to 9-2 on the year with the shutout of the Crusaders. Van Buren falls to 2-9-1. Individual results were not reported.
